Description

The Common Threads program offers hands-on training in essential sewing techniques and industrial machine operation, guiding participants through practical projects like aprons, bags, and pullovers. Alongside technical skills, students gain English language proficiency, focusing on effective communication relevant to the trade. The curriculum includes instruction in the imperial measurement system, garment alterations, sewing pattern comprehension, and drafting. Participants also benefit from business skills workshops in collaboration with the CEI Women’s Business Center and the Welcome Immigrant Center, covering topics from entrepreneurship to home-based contracting. Additionally, the program supports career readiness, helping students build a resume and portfolio and develop interview skills, ensuring they are well-prepared for employment or independent contracting in the sewing industry.

Students will learn:



  • Sewing techniques and how to operate many types of industrial machines through making projects like aprons, bags, and pullovers.

  • How to communicate in English.

  • The imperial measurement system.

  • How to do alterations, understand sewing patterns and draft a pattern.

  • How to start a business (Workshop with C.E.I Women’s Business Center and welcome Immigrant Center)

  • How to work as a contractor from home

  • How to build a resume, portfolio, and interview skills. 


Sewing class:



  • Tuesday through Thursday from 8:30 to 2pm 


 


English and Math Literacy:



  • Tuesday from 1 to 2pm 


Optional open studio time:



  • Tuesday through Thursday from 2 to 3pm

  • Some Monday from 8:30 to 2pm
