Summary This Engineering Equipment Operator position is located at Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor, ME. Please visit find a park for additional park information. This is a Permanent, Competitive, Full-time, Career-Seasonal appointment. Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as permanent appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. Responsibilities At the full performance level (WG-08) the major duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following: Operates full range of track and wheel mounted engineering equipment such as motor grader, front end loader, bulldozer, excavator, backhoe, snowplows, sander and dump truck. Performs typical duties such as grade roads and building sites, push material in to piles, load and drive trucks, dig trenches, clear sites of brush Moves equipment from site to site using truck and trailer. Digs and cleans ditches. Installs culverts with outlets, inlets, and head walls. Removes and trims trees. Chips, bucks, and hauls down wood using chainsaws, chippers and chip trucks. Requirements Conditions of Employment Must be a U.S. Citizen or National. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. You are required to wear a uniform and comply with the uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You must be at least 18 years of age or older to operate government vehicles. As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated. This probationary period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service. When operational needs and/or funds are not available, the employee will be placed in non-pay status. Placement in non-pay status will not be on a sporadic, occasional, or unplanned basis. Selectees are guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year, with the work schedule to be determined upon appointment. You will work approximately 23 pay periods, and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year. Non-pay status is anticipated to be: Nov 11, 2026 – JAN 09, 2027. Physical Demands: Heavy physical effort is required in constantly reaching, bending, turning, and moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to handle different sets of controls to operate the equipment and attachments. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the incumbent is frequently required to work in awkward or strained positions. The incumbent may be frequently required to lift and carry items weighing 75 pounds and put forth similar effort when pushing, pulling, turning, and positioning parts, assemblies, equipment, and tools. Working Conditions: This position is required to perform work both inside and outside with most of the work performed outside. When working outside, the incumbent is frequently exposed to inclement weather. The incumbent works in rain, mud, snow, and in hot/cold temperatures and is frequently exposed to irritation or discomfort from noise, vibration, dust, dirt, fumes, exhaust, oils, heat, cold, and dampness.
