Medical Assistant
Reports To: Clinical Practice Director, Clinical Coordinator
Status: Hourly

POSITION SUMMARY
The Medical Assistant provides nursing and administrative assistance to the Clinical Medical Staff. The Medical Assistant functions under the supervision of the Provider and the Registered Nurse and works as part of the Care Team ensure effective and quality care is given to the KVHC patient.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Under the direction of the Provider and Registered Nurse, the Medical Assistant is responsible for providing medical care to patients in the Health Center setting.
2. Takes patient vital signs and document.
3. Take histories and perform screening procedures as indicated.
4. Prepares exam room and treatment room with necessary instruments.
5. Assist Providers in preparing for minor surgeries and physicals.
6. Assists with tests such as EKG, treadmill, radiogram, as directed by the provider.
7. Administers parenteral medications including routine immunizations, therapeutic injections and inhalation medications via nebulizer under the direction of a provider.
8. Performs lab tests, e.g. HCT, urinalysis, pregnancy tests, also draw blood and prepare it for transport.
9. Assists in maintaining compliance with quality assurance standards including CLIA.
10. Maintain the laboratory and laboratory equipment in good order; maintain proper temperature in incubators, refrigerator and freezer, according to CLIA standards.
11. Prepares and maintains supplies and equipment for treatments, including sterilization.
12. Checks charts for lab and x-ray reports for review.
13. Supports the pre-visit planning process and prepares for the days schedule with a daily team huddle with provider.
14. Participates in physician, team and staff education and training for integrated care; continuing education about integration and evidence-based practice is routinely completed to maintain knowledge and skills.
15. Participate in the Clinical Care Team as outlined in Team Approach to Care Protocol.
16. Work as part of the Clinical Care Team to ensure effective and quality care is given to the KVHC patient.
17. Performs additional duties or projects as assigned by the Nursing Director or Clinical Coordinator.
18. Adheres to all KVHC policies and protocols.
19. Complies with all safety rules and protocols. Reports all incidents, regardless of severity, immediately to their supervisor and completes an incident report and investigation form, which will be forwarded to Human Resources within 24 hours of the incident.
20. Conducts themselves as a good steward in the communities served by KVHC; represents the organization at outreach activities as needed.
21. Actively participates as committee member as assigned by the Chief Executive Officer.
22. Interacts harmoniously and effectively with others. Focusing on the attainment of organization goals and objectives through a commitment to team work.
23. Conforms to acceptable attendance and punctuality standards as expressed in the employee handbook.
24. Abides by the organization’s compliance program and requirements

26. The employee may be responsible for traveling to multiple locations as specified in their job offer and/or contract.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
1. High school diploma or equivalent, or a combination of education and experience.
2. Graduation from an accredited program for Medical Assistants or equivalent in work experience.
3. Medical Assistant Certification preferred; and required within 6 months of hire.
4. Must have current CPR certification.
5. Must be able to work independently in a team setting and to react to change.
6. Must have excellent interpersonal skills and problem solving skills.
7. Must be able to work under pressure in a busy health office setting.
8. Must possess a clean criminal and DHHS background.
9. Must possess the ability and means to travel between clinics as needed.
10. Valid State of Maine Driver’s license and ability to be insured by KVHC’s vehicle insurance carrier.
FUNCTION, DEMANDS AND PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE
Requires full range of body motion with the ability to bend, kneel and stoop. Must possess: the ability to sit and or stand for long periods of time, the ability to lift approximately 30 lbs., visual acuity with color vision, the ability to communicate effectively and calmly in a professional manner, the ability to follow all workplace policies including safety and confidentiality, the ability to perform repetitive motion keyboarding functions, exposure to communicable disease, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to clinic environment. Knowledge of organizational policies, regulations, and procedures to administer patient care. Must possess the ability to work with and around medical equipment and instruments safely and effectively as appropriate. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment including Safety Data Sheets. Skill in preparing and maintaining records, writing reports, and responding to correspondence. Skill in developing and maintaining department quality assurance. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public. Ability to maintain quality control standards. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergencies. Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures. Ability to communicate clearly.
