Job Description

The Ellsworth Police Department is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Police Officer. The Ellsworth Police Department offers a schedule of 12-hour shifts (Panama shift schedule) with built-in overtime every other week and every other weekend off. 

The City of Ellsworth offers the Maine State Retirement 2C plan for Police Officers. Officers are eligible to retire at 50% pay of their top highest three years. Overtime opportunities will allow for significantly increased earning potential. There is no age limit to withdraw and for every year you remain vested after 25, you add 2%. Applicants can also choose an ICMA 457 retirement plan offering a 10% contribution by the city.

  • Interested officers can also be cross trained in emergency dispatcher duties

Officers also achieve instructor certifications allowing them to conduct training both in the department and at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in subjects such as:

  • Firearms Instructor
  • Mechanics of Arrest, Restraint and Control and other law-enforcement-related defensive tactics programs
  • De-escalation Strategies
  • Handgun/Rifle Armorer
  • Standard Field Sobriety Test/Intoxilyzer
  • TASER/less lethal munitions
  • Active Threat Response
  • Physical Fitness Testing
  • Drug Recognition Expert for OUI investigations

Qualifications

Applicants are not required to have a degree but must be 21 years old to apply. If you are 20 years of age, you must have a minimum of 60 credit hours.

Applicants are required to have already taken and passed the Maine Criminal Justice Academy Physical Fitness Test. You must submit these results with your application.

Salary

The City of Ellsworth offers a competitive salary and comprehensive benefit package to include vacation, holidays, sick leave, health insurance, dental insurance, life insurance, Aflac supplemental insurance, employee assistance, uniforms and equipment. Pay ranges from $36.63 to $43.16 per hour with agreed upon pay increases and longevity steps. Lateral transfer available. Stipends offered for post-secondary education, military service and certain Department specialties and assignments. We also offer bonuses for passing annual physical fitness tests and a membership to a  local Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gym at no cost.
