Description
The objectives of the Health Information Technology program are to provide students with the knowledge and
skills necessary to be effective and efficient in the Health Information Technology field. Health Information
Technicians are responsible for ensuring the quality of health records and healthcare data by verifying
completeness, accuracy, and proper entry into computer systems. These skills can be applied in a variety of
settings including but not limited to hospitals, nursing homes, mental health facilities, public health agencies and
insurance companies. Graduates of the Health Information Technology program are eligible to sit for the
Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) exam.
Program Goals and Learning Outcomes:
? Exhibit communication skills both oral and written.
? Demonstrate skill in ensuring the quality of health records and healthcare data.
? Understand policies and procedures with regard to health information use and disclosure.
? Demonstrate knowledge of the types of laws that govern the healthcare industry. Discuss
the HIPAA Privacy Rule and HIPAA Security Rule with regard to health information use
and disclosure, including requirements implemented by the American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act.
? Verify completeness, accuracy, and proper entry into computer systems.
? Apply skills in in-patient and out-patient coding.
Career Preparation:
The Health Information Technology program will provide the opportunity to seek entry-level
positions in a diverse field including but not limited to health information technician, medical coder,
medical records analyst, health information specialist, and risk manager.
