The Bureau of Veterans Services seeking applications to fill the anticipated vacancy for the Director of Communications for the Maine Bureau of Veterans Services (MBVS). The position reports to the Director of the Maine Bureau of Veterans Services.

Responsibilities include:

The Bureau administrative lead for public outreach and communications. This includes but is not limited to:

+ Developing and implementing policies and procedures for the MBVS communications, outreach & marketing program; overseeing these programs with general direction and supervision from the Bureau Director and Deputy Director.

+ Overseeing the development of all media, marketing and outreach programs for MBVS in order to provide maximum information distribution to Maine veterans and their families.

+ Responding to inquiries from the media and the public on behalf of MBVS.

+ Representing MBVS at public events and meetings.

+ Coordinating MBVS staff presence at events and meetings across the State of Maine.

+ Administratively oversee and produce content for MBVS’ social media sites.

+ Ensure all print and web-based materials are updated annually and distributed state-wide.

+ Act as liaison for state, federal, non-profit, and individual veteran advocacy needs

Required Knowledge and Abilities:

The successful candidate will maintain working relationships with federal and state agencies, veterans’ organizations, Bureau staff, community-based organizations, and the news media. Considerable public speaking ability to address veterans advocate groups and the media regarding current rules, regulations, changes and trends in the veterans’ benefit domain is required.

The successful candidate must also have a strong desire and compassion to assist our veterans and must understand veterans’ resources at the state, national, federal, and community level. The position will require daily interaction and service to the public both in-person and on the phone or computer.

Frequent travel throughout the state of Maine as well as occasional out-of-state travel is required.

Minimum Requirements:

+ Ten (10) year combination of education and/or professional experience in communications, public outreach, public relations, or related fields.

+ Bachelor’s degree (higher is preferred)

+ Working understanding of veterans’ issues

Preference will be given to applicants who are veterans.
