At the Workers’ Compensation Board’s Advocate Office, we provide legal representation without cost to injured workers pursuing claims before the Workers’ Compensation Board. While no two days are the same, on a typical day you will:

+ Research, analyze, and evaluate a variety of complex legal material in order to incorporate related material into draft reports and assist attorneys in completing legal casework.

+ Interpret and explain laws, statutes, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures in order to provide information, clarification, and/or promote understanding.

+ Abstract complex recorded instruments, records, and legal documents in order to compile needed documentation.

+ Compile and prepare a variety of complex and comprehensive legal documents and reports to provide draft or final documents for review and/or signature of Advocates and Administrative Law Judges.

+ Confer, negotiate, and/or advocate for clients, organizational representatives, attorneys, and others to provide advocacy, promote understanding, and/or resolve issues.

+ Maintain and organize databases compiling case data and information on various files maintained by the unit.

+ Interact with the public and act as a liaison between the public and the Advocates and ensure citizen complaints are directed to the appropriate authority.

+ Attend administrative hearings and/or meetings to provide administrative support.

To be successful in this role, you should have:

+ Knowledge of legal documents, court procedures, rules of evidence and litigation practices.

+ Knowledge of applicable state/federal statutes, case law, and regulations.

+ Ability to prepare for and conduct alternative dispute resolution sessions.

+ Ability to understand, explain and interpret statutes and administrative regulations.

+ Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

+ Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

+ Ability to provide negotiation and advocacy services.

+ Ability to abstract and analyze complex comprehensive recorded instruments, records, and legal documents.

Minimum Qualifications: A Bachelors’ Degree and two (2) years of paralegal experience in a law firm, court, or legal services agency – OR – graduation from an approved, accredited paralegal program of instruction and one (1) year of paralegal experience. Equivalent related experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
