Job Description Summary: MaineGeneral Health is currently seeking a Lab Assistant to join our Microbiology team. We are a CAP accredited, 24/7 lab that is responsible for over 1 million tests annually for the central Maine Community. Lab Assistants perform routine and specialized blood drawing from patients to obtain specimens for use in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases.

Job Description:

The Work:

+ Processes specimens for stat and routine testing/analysis or transport to external laboratory.

+ Orders, receives, accessions, and tracks specimens in the department’s information system(s). Verifies accuracy of collected specimens against orders and performs waived testing, as required.

+ Prepares specimens for testing or shipment to internal/external laboratory. Disposes of specimens according to policies and procedures.

+ Performs clerical duties including maintaining supplies and equipment.

+ Critical thinking and problem solving skills

+ A desire to work in a fast-paced environment with the ability to multi-task

+ Knowledge of Human Anatomy: A solid understanding of human anatomy, including the structure, organization, and functions of various systems and organs in the human body.

+ Communication and Collaboration: Effective communication skills to interact with other team members, scientists, and researchers, and the ability to work collaboratively in a laboratory setting.

+ Safety Procedures: Understanding of safety protocols and adherence to maintain aseptic and safe working conditions in the laboratory.
