Spectrum provides services at many of Maine’s hospitals throughout the state and in eastern New Hampshire. POSITION SUMMARY As an integral member of the healthcare team, the Sterile Processing Tech is responsible for the decontaminating, inspecting, assembling /disassembling, packaging, and sterilizing all supplies and instrumentation used in the course of surgical procedures essential for patient safety. Position coordinates with Surgical Technologists and nursing staff in determining and anticipating the needs of the Operating Room schedule. This includes establishing sterility improvement and testing in all packaging or processing of instrumentation and supplies, providing safe storage, and proper rotation and utilization. HOURS: Mon-Fri 6:30am-3pm 8am-4:30pm 9am-close. These shifts rotate weekly. Based on experience and qualifications the average hourly compensation for this position will range from $23.00 – $25.00. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

+ Decontaminates and sterilizes instruments, medical supplies, and equipment, and assembles, wraps and sterilizes trays of instruments. Follows proper Standard Precautions while in decontamination and sterilization areas.

+ Monitors biological and chemical wash solution to ensure quality and consistency for decontamination of instruments and medical equipment.

+ Sorts mismatched sets of instruments, trays, and medical equipment and makes them available to sterile processing customers in a timely manner.

+ Restocks, labels, and maintains inventory, submits requisitions, collects, and distributes instruments, trays, crash carts, and facility medical equipment.

+ Performs environmental maintenance duties and assists in maintaining inventory levels in sterile processing, the operating room, and in equipment storage areas.

+ PRE-OPERATIVELY: Coordinates with the nursing staff in anticipating the caseloads of the Operating Room schedule in completing and sterilizing instrument sets for each case. Notifies the ASC Manager if there is a conflict or shortage.

+ POST-OPERATIVELY: Takes personal precautions in cleaning and handling of dirty instruments and utensils. Uses proper care recommended by manufacturers for the cleaning and reprocessing of instruments and equipment. Notifies the ASC Manager immediately of faulty mechanisms or damage.

+ Performs other duties necessary to maintain the overall efficiency and continuity of the clinic

+ Verifies that equipment functions properly, requisitions for equipment maintenance, repair, or replacement, and removes defective equipment.

+ Maintains a clean, safe work environment

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

+ Assists with maintaining established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, and quality improvement, safety, and environmental and infection control standards.

+ Prepares for use and performs basic maintenance on equipment

+ Maintains records of instruments and kits that have been sterilized, checked out and returned

+ Keeps abreast of current issues involving patient care or practice issues by attending and participating in department, team, and practice meetings

+ Displays cooperative behavior and interacts positively and effectively with others to promote a team environment

+ Performs other duties necessary to maintain the overall efficiency and continuity of the clinic

+ Is proactive in identifying, reporting, and participating in the resolution of any potential or actual patient safety issues

QUALIFICATIONS

+ High School diploma or equivalent

+ Sterile processing experience preferred

+ Knowledge and experience with instrument processing and infection control

+ Familiarity with surgical instrument decontamination and sterilization techniques

+ Knowledge of medical terminology

+ Skill in performing arithmetic calculations

+ Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

+ Strong attention to detail

+ Current Basic Life Support

+ Ability to maintain confidentiality

+ Certification as a regulatory requirement may be required in the future

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT

+ Exposure to biohazards

+ Daily constant use operating department machinery, equipment, and devices

+ Light lifting of paperwork, folders or other general record keeping materials

+ Operation of various office equipment: stationary PC, Laptop PC, keyboard and mouse fax machine, telephone & voice mail system, e-mail system, scanner, and copier

+ Lifting up to 20 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds frequently

+ Walks frequently

+ May be required to sit or stand for extended periods of time

+ Occasional reaching, twisting, bending
