Spectrum provides services at many of Maine’s hospitals throughout the state and in eastern New Hampshire. POSITION OVERVIEW The Registered Nurse PAT is a dynamic, self-motivated, detail-oriented position in a fast-paced ambulatory surgery environment. The PAT RN performs pre-admission screening, assessment, and management of patients scheduled for surgery in addition to acting as a patient/family advocate and educator appropriate to the provision of patient care. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS+ Assesses patients for allergies and/or conditions that would exclude them from surgery in an ambulatory care setting, based on established protocols and exclusion criteria.
+ Identifies and implements appropriate clearances and consults as applicable to the patient’s history to ensure surgical safety in an ambulatory surgery setting, based on established protocols.
+ Works collaboratively with providers to complete the pre-surgical assessment and education.
+ Performs pre-surgical testing, including but not limited to, EKGs, blood draws, nasal/oropharyngeal swabs.
+ Performs accurate and timely documentation in the patient’s EMR
+ Supports patient rights and ethics by delivering consistent, competent, and ethical care within legal standards of practice, while maintaining privacy and support of the patient’s value system.
+ Demonstrates knowledge of the health system environment and administrative issues that impact job performance, patient safety, and ethical considerations.
+ Ensures all physician orders are carried out appropriately and timely.
+ Obtains vital signs to detect deviations from expected normal values and assesses condition.
+ Consistently communicates effectively and respectfully with the patient to assure they understand all procedures and feel as comfortable as possible.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES+ Demonstrates professionalism at all times
+ Acts as a resource to other members of the PAT team by demonstrating solid assessment skills and a strong knowledge of pathophysiology and pharmacology
+ Monitors the Pre-admission testing schedule and coordinates an efficient work-flow to complete daily work
+ Works collectively with other members of the healthcare team to ensure completion of health history review, clearances, and applicable testing in a timely manner prior to patient’s scheduled surgery
+ Responsible for maintaining licensure and relevant certifications; ongoing personal and professional growth and development
+ Keeps abreast of current issues involving patient care or practice issues by attending and participating in department, team and practice meetings
+ Displays cooperative behavior and interacts positively and effectively with others to promote a team environment
+ Is proactive in identifying, reporting and participating in the resolution of any potential or actual patient safety issues

+ Performs all necessary tasks in an efficient and timely manner to ensure the patient has all medical clearance(s) in place to undergo surgery
QUALIFICATIONS+ Registered Nurse degree from an accredited school of nursing
+ Active State of Maine Nursing License or eligible for licensure
+ Orthopedic nursing experience helpful
+ 2 or more years related experience working in a medical practice, hospital, or healthcare facility;
+ Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
+ Excellent communication and interpersonal skills necessary for interacting with patients, physicians, supervisors, and other staff
+ Skill in time management, prioritizing and medical care coordination
+ Ability to organize and accomplish tasks, and have the flexibility to meet changing demands on a daily basis
+ Ability to demonstrate compassion and caring in dealing with others
+ Ability to maintain confidentiality
+ Ability to project and maintain a professional image
+ Ability to work independently and excel as part of a team
+ Excellent customer service skills
+ Proficient computer skills
PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT+ Daily use of computer operating instruments; stationary PC, Laptop PC, keyboard and mouse
+ Light lifting of paperwork, folders or other general record-keeping materials
+ Operation of various office equipment: fax machine, telephone & voice mail system, stationary/laptop computer, e-mail system, scanner, and copier
+ May be required to sit or stand for extended periods of time
+ Risk of exposure to hazardous conditions and blood-borne pathogens
+ Occasional reaching, twisting, bending
