Job Description
The Jackson Laboratory has an opportunity for a Facilities & Grounds Technician II at our Bar Harbor facility. Working under limited supervision, this position is responsible for the movement of office furnishings, laboratory equipment, trash and recycling, transportation of employees and visitors. Evening and weekend work is often required through the duration of the conference season and winter snow season. Under direction, coordinate the grounds and landscape program for the Jackson Laboratory, design, implement and maintain areas for new plants and irrigation systems, maintain all necessary records for chemical usage, drain maintenance etc. Monitor and give input for the operational budget. Serve as lead worker to other classified staff in the area, also supervise students and volunteers; perform related work as required. Distinguished from Groundskeeper II by increased breadth of coordinating grounds projects. Must have the knowledge to perform the work as well as coordinate the work of others and providing training and guidance to other Grounds personnel.
Responsibilities:
Performs general maintenance tasks up to individual skill level across the entire campus.
Assists with the handling and transportation of materials and people as directed.
Maintains campus grounds year round including, but not limited to: snow & ice removal, gardening, lawn care and maintenance, road and walkway maintenance, general cleanup, miscellaneous projects related to campus grounds.
Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of all equipment and supplies in all areas of responsibility.
Operates heavy equipment including, but not limited to: Skid-steer loaders, dump trucks, trash truck, ride-on lawn mowers, chainsaws, and plows & sanders.
Provides on-site guidance and leadership to contractors or small work crews as designated by supervisor. Demonstrated proficiency in properly identifying, planting, pruning and trimming campus plant life as directed.
Operates and maintains underground irrigation systems.
Qualifications:
High school diploma/equivalent.
Knowledge of proper use of mechanical equipment required for completion of assignments.
Good comprehension of both oral and written instructions and information.
Ability to safely operate associated power tools and equipment to perform job duties that use such as drills, sanders, lawn mowers, snow blowers, power saws.
Ability to repair and maintain equipment, tractors and lawn mowers.
Ability to perform physical tasks on a regular basis, regularly lifting up to 50 pounds, and occasionally up to 100 or more pounds when moving equipment, etc.
Ability to work in outdoor weather conditions ranging from extreme cold to extreme heat.
Ability to work in a team environment with minimal supervision.
Ability to work with basic Windows computer applications.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license
At least 3 years experience working on areas of primary responsibility as noted above.
Technical training in horticulture field with the ability to identify many of the ornamental and native plants on campus.
Ability to work with a broad range of both internal and external personnel and contractors.
Ability to read, understand and use blueprints and technical plans to complete projects in related fields.
Certification Requirements: Valid driver's license
