Summary
~ 36 Hours a week, 12 hour shifts, 7 - 7, with weekend rotations ~
Southern Maine Health Care is offering employment to Student Nurses through a 10-week, 360 hour summer program. Nurse Associates will perform various service duties and technical tasks such as taking vital signs and assisting patients with basic hygiene and activities of daily living. Specific duties may vary by area of assignment.
From the beginning of June to the middle of August, you will work in our caring, nurturing environment under the guidance of an experienced registered nurse in one of our Patient Care areas. As a participant in the SMHC Student "Nurse Associate" program you will observe firsthand, the dynamics of collaborative nursing practice and to begin the transition of student to professional nurse.
Orientation classes will supplement your hands-on clinical experiences. Clinical opportunities will be offered in our Medical/Surgical Departments in Biddeford. These departments will provide a fast-paced work environment, and the experience provided will develop critical thinking skills, teamwork and collaborative skills with solid patient care experiences.

Program Timeline:
Program commences on June 12, 2023 and runs for 10 weeks.
You will be assigned to work (3) 12-hour shifts: 7am-7pm or 7pm-7am, and will include some weekends.
Eligibility
The Nurse Associate Program is open to any nursing student who:

Will have senior status in a ADN or BSN program for the fall semester of 2023
Anticipates graduation in December 2023 or May 2024
Has completed at least one acute care clinical
Is a current CNA, on State of Maine Registry
Is certified in Health Care Provider BLS through August 2023
Is a student in good standing at an accredited school of nursing
Med Surg 4 (MS4) / Cardiac Unit - Acute Care Environment is a fast-paced 40 bed / 32 telemetry Adult Medical Surgical unit at Southern Maine Health Care in Biddeford, Maine. The healthcare team provides care to adult complex patient populations from a wide variety of medical-surgical services with a concentration of post-cardiac procedure patients. As well as IMC level patients.
Position Summary
The health care work force of the future should have the knowledge and skills to provide patient-centered, community-focused, cost-effective, clinically- effective, coordinated care. To do these things successfully, the work force must be competent, flexible, and adaptive to changes in health care delivery and technology. Under the direction of an R.N., functions as a team member by performing delegated patient care activities and related non- professional services necessary in caring for the personal needs and comfort of patients. Performs a variety of tasks including cleaning of care areas, stocking and disposal of linen and materials supply to ensure assigned areas are kept clean and adequately supplied.
Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
Education: High School graduate or equivalent preferred.
License/Certifications: Completion of a nurse's aide training course approved by the Maine State Board of Nursing preferred. State of Maine CNA license required. BLS Certification (obtain within 6 months of hire).
Experience: One year's experience in an acute care setting desirable.
