Site Reliability Engineer

The Computational Sciences - Scientific Computing group at the Jackson Laboratory is looking for a Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) to lead/contribute to a wide range of genomic medicine and scientific research projects to solve complex human diseases. This role provides an excellent opportunity to develop/manage software systems and automated solutions for operational aspects while implementing best practices for availability, reliability and scalability of distributed systems within JAX.

The ideal candidate should have wide understanding of the system and application architecture and be able to apply sound software engineering principles, recommend operational best practices, and setup automation of continuous integration / continuous deployment (CI/CD) processes to our current operating environments and new cloud deployments.

Additional responsibility would involve in ensuring shortening the software delivery times by introducing new technologies and migrating from existing established infrastructure, such as migrating from Virtual Machines to the Kubernetes platform and similar.

This role will have a high impact on projects supporting research at the forefront of genetics and genomics.The solutions you develop will lead to a better understanding of highly complex biological systems and support the search for cures for cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, and other genetic disorders. Designing elegant and robust digital experiences that facilitate the discovery process is our core objective.

Remote candidates must be willing to travel periodically to Farmington CT or Bar Harbor ME campuses.

Key Responsibilities
Analyze existing systems and maintain software applications to support production operations.
Troubleshoot, evaluate and resolve operational challenges related to deployments.
Define, improve, and engage in adapting application bottlenecks through continuous monitoring and automation of CI/CD processes.
Plan, design and create solutions to monitor production systems and report system failures through automation.
Contribute to the future roadmap of software development teams and establish strong operational readiness across teams.
Work to enable other teams to scale through automation, knowledge-sharing, and self-service activities.
Actively looks for opportunities to improve the availability and performance of the system by applying the learnings from monitoring and observation.
Proposes and drives architectural changes that affect the computational community to solve scaling and performance problems.

Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or relevant business discipline.
3 to 5 years of experience in supporting, monitoring, and maintaining servers, networks, services, and distributed systems.
2+ years of experience in build automation and deployment of infrastructure using Docker, Kubernetes & other orchestration technologies in a hybrid-cloud environment.
Experienced in the latest DevOps skills and methodologies - Create and manage a continuous build, integration, test, and deployment systems.
Familiar with CI/CD tools such as Jenkins, Bamboo, Docker and Bitbucket.
Proficient in coding with programming languages such as Java, C++, Python and Shell Scripting.
Through understanding of systems, infrastructure such as Cloud Technologies, container orchestration with Kubernetes and microservices.
Experience in troubleshooting, optimizing code and automate routine workload task.
Excellent problem solving and communication skills.

The salary range is  $75,743 -  $130,196 Salary will be determined based on qualifications and experience
