The Jackson Laboratory (JAX) is seeking a Director of the Single Cell Biology Laboratory (SCBL). This Director will provide scientific direction and leadership of state-of-the art methods in this biological space and the delivery of these methods and services in support of the JAX research community and its external partners.

This individual will lead and direct the effort to develop, test, compare, validate and make available to the JAX/University of Connecticut Health Center research community the latest cutting-edge technologies for the characterization of cells as single entities (single cell assays), within their spatial context (tissue spatial profiling) and functionally in 3D cellular models (3D high-content cell screening). The Director of the SCBL will have responsibility for the on-going operations of the SCBL, coordination with faculty users and other scientific services, and research and development programs to establish and implement new approaches in the field. Key responsibilities include:

Oversees SCBL operations, including management of infrastructure, budget and processes required for the delivery of integrated single cell/spatial/functional biology operations supporting the needs of all JAX campuses.

Manages the Associate Director(s) and all PhD level staff directly. Oversees all staff in the SCBL core of the Bar Harbor, ME and Farmington, CT SCBL labs.

Ensures that the JAX research community has access to the highest quality, cost effective, and timely SCBL services and evolves operational approaches to meet this requirement.

Interfaces with other JAX core leaders to facilitate collaborative efforts and establish common workflows related to sample collection, processing, sequencing, and analysis.

Establishes and supervises SCBL Project Management capabilities (staff & infrastructure) and implements protocols, deliverables and performance metrics with appropriate documentation.

Provides scientific leadership in the single-cell biology field via consultative services for experimental design, data acquisition, analysis and downstream interpretation; supports/participates in grant applications and publications with JAX Faculty.

Extends the JAX platform access through collaborative, service and commercial partnerships.

Develops project and funding proposals for internal and public funding of research and development efforts and instrumentation within the context of the SCBL (federal, state, and internal grants).

Successfully implements SCBL technologies in support of JAX faculty research programs.

Provides effective SCBL management in the effort of successful grant applications and publication.

Qualifications include:

PhD in relevant biomedical field (e.g. Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Genomics, Cell Biology or similar).

At least seven years of recognized single cell/spatial biology experience, evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and invited speaker presentations.

Prior experience, two years or more preferred, overseeing/leading single cell and spatial omics scientific service core laboratory.

Prior experience in establishing and developing automated 3D cellular system platforms inclusive of imaging-based phenotypic screens, CRISPR screens and drug screens.

Demonstrated experience in evaluating and implementing new technologies related to single cell/spatial omics.

Ability to catalyze effective collaboration among between teams towards common goals and milestones.

Demonstrated experience in complex human-based 3D cell culture systems.

Prior successful experience mentoring trainees and research staff and commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive work environment.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a specific ability to positively influence and motivate through communication.

The successful applicant will be responsible for managing labs on both campuses and that several trips a year to the Bar Harbor campus will be expected
