Job Description
The Transgenic Genotyping Service (TGS)has a Genotyping Technician position available working in the Genotyping Lab in Bar Harbor.The incumbent plays an essential role in the overall success of JAX Mice revenue growth (Production, Repository, Custom Breeding Services, and Reproductive Sciences Services) by using cutting-edge molecular techniques to ensure the proper genetic characterization for all mice that require genotyping. They function under high-throughput conditions and are responsible for continuous improvement to safeguard high quality output along with efficiency gains to ensure an excellent experience for internal and external customers.
Key Responsibilities:
Performing routine genotyping including the use of robotic and manual micropipetting processes for PCR experiment set up, data analysis, assay troubleshooting, and work list management. This position will also perform support tasks including DNA extraction, mixing reagents, making and cataloguing controls, among others.
This position may include some occasional weekend work, but standard work is performed Monday - Friday.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in the life sciences or related discipline or two years of experience in a relevant field where mouse genetics was a primary factor.
Knowledge of college level Mendelian genetics that can be obtained through a genetics course at an accredited college or university or through successful completion of the Jackson Laboratory genetics course. Other means of acquiring this knowledge will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
Experience and knowledge of DNA extraction, PCR processes, agarose gels, and pipetting is desirable.
Proficient in working with computer software and databases such as Excel, Outlook, and Word.
Strong written and oral communication skills sufficient to permit clear and effective exchange of information with people representing a wide diversity of disciplines and levels within the organization.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while consistently maintaining a positive and professional demeanor.
