  • This is earning potential over the course of eight steps, new hires start at step one. Annual step increases are based on performance reviews and authorization of such increases.

The Department of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Air Quality, is seeking to fill an Environmental Specialist III position to be located in either Augusta or Portland, Maine.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION: The purpose of this posting is to fill a new position within the Bureau of Air Quality’s Division of Licensing and Compliance following the recently adopted Chapter 180: Appliance Efficiency Standards. The position is primarily responsible for providing compliance assistance, conducting inspections, investigations and enforcement activities, and providing state and federal regulatory guidance to persons selling appliances and fixtures, as well as to the general public throughout Maine. Tasks include the development and delivery of outreach and education materials; compliance inspections; complaint investigation and resolution; evaluating pollution control methods for emission units and processes; data entry and maintaining databases; site visits to licensed and unlicensed sources; compliance assistance activities; writing, reviewing, and analyzing technical reports; and other related tasks. The position interfaces with a variety of facilities and their consultants, Department-wide staff, the US Environmental Protection Agency, the general public, and other interested parties. Preference will be given to candidates with skills and/or experience in:

+ Knowledge of state and federal air pollution regulations;

+ Knowledge of air pollution, the sources that generate it, and methods used to monitor and control;

+ Conducting compliance inspections;

+ Identifying and analyzing issues, reaching logical conclusions, and making sound recommendations/decisions;

+ Providing technical assistance and training;

+ Database management and other computer skills;

+ Effectively communicating technical information verbally and in writing;

+ Strong customer service and complaint resolution skills.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A six (6) year combination of education and/or experience in environmental, biological, physical science, or engineering which includes two (2) years of environmental experience. Qualifying education must include at least 15 credit hours of science or engineering coursework from an accredited educational institution.
