Summary


Position Summary

Under broad supervision, works independently to direct and coordinate all clinical nutrition activities associated with the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery patients. Works directly with the members of the SMHC Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery team. Using advanced clinical knowledge provides education, specialized consultation, and guidance in nutritional management to patients, physicians, dietitians and other members of the care team. Functions as a technical resource for the nutrition support service for the development of clinical nutrition research studies, proposals and protocols.

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Dietetics/Nutritional Sciences from an accredited college or university is preferred

License/Certification: Must be a Licensed Registered Dietitian with a B.S. degree and Master degree or eligibility to sit for the Certified Specialist in Obesity and Weight Management (CSOWM) credential. Within 18 months of hire must hold CSOWM. Must maintain Maine State Dietitian License and Registration in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND).

Experience: Work requires ability to concentrate and be attentive to detail when assessing and calculating patients' nutritional needs, developing care plans and providing ongoing evaluation of nutrition.

Minimum of 3 years of clinical nutrition experience preferred.

Must possess high level of interpersonal skills in order to communicate effectively with patients, families, medical staff and employees in explaining and providing nutrition educational information.

Must possess relatively high level of analytical abilities in order to assess patients' medical and nutritional status, formulate care plans and evaluate patients' responses and progress.

Work requires one - two months of orientation to acquire necessary familiarity with department and hospital policies and procedures.
