Job Description

Knox County Homeless Coalition (KCHC) is seeking an Assistant Shelter Manager to support the Hospitality House family shelter. Ideal candidates will have some experience, interest in, or exposure to social work and/or residential care. This is a role that changes the lives of children and families each and every day—tough but very rewarding.

Based out of Rockport/Rockland in beautiful Mid-Coast Maine, KCHC is the only comprehensive homeless service provider supporting individuals and families experiencing homelessness in Knox, Waldo, and parts of Lincoln counties. We deliver home, help and hope through our wrap-around programming, including Comprehensive Client Care services, the Hospitality House Family Shelter, and The Landing Place Youth Program.  We deliver our services with dignity and respect.

The Assistant Shelter Manager will work closely with the Shelter Manager to support families on their path to independence. The Assistant Shelter Manager supports the operational and program areas of the shelter. Duties include but are not limited to managing and handling operational and logistical tasks, scheduling and coordinating staff and client services, supporting residents in their individual programming-- including families who are often experiencing trauma and heightened emotional experiences. This important role requires flexibility and some knowledge of-- or willingness to learn about-- trauma informed care, reflective listening and learning, de-escalation, strengths based approaches and more. The Assistant Shelter Manager is responsible for ensuring a safe and secure environment for individuals, families, and staff.

We are in search of someone who is kind, compassionate, professional, and encompasses strong communication, organizational and interpersonal skills. Our Assistant Shelter Manager must have a positive regard and respect for residents. Good judgment, capacity to prioritize and maintain a solid sense of ‘urgency’ and good judgment based on real time and often changing scenarios, and self-motivation are important qualities for this role. Basic computer skills are required and essential. This role will include sharing in the ‘on call’ area of responsibility which is divided among several team members. This individual will also need to be willing and able to fill in for shelter staff if/as needed.

The Assistant Shelter Manager is responsible for purchasing, documenting confidential information, appropriately mediating house conflicts, assisting with facilities management, being a liaison between Shelter Manager and Shelter Support Staff.

A High School diploma or equivalent is required, as well as 2 years of working in residential programs, client support, health and human services, or the medical field. Associates or BA in social work or related field preferred. Must be comfortable with current technology, including Google Suite and Microsoft Office, as well as the ability to learn new softwares easily.

This full time position pays $20 - $24 an hour based on experience, with additional compensation for on call time.
