CURRENT VACANCY INFORMATION
The Department of Corrections is accepting applications for a Director of Security, Long Creek Youth Development Center, South Portland, Maine. This recruitment is open to Agency and the public.
This is a year-round, 224 day position. The primary purpose of the position is to teach Physical Education and Health to secondary students that are incarcerated and/or detained at the Long Creek Youth Development Center. Responsibilities include testing students, developing curricula and educational plans, instructing classes, and evaluating student progress to help prepare them for educational or career pathways upon release.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED TO PERFORM THE JOB SUCCESSFULLY:
+ Knowledge of modern Juvenile security principles and practices.
+ Evaluates student academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports.
+ Maintains student discipline through adherence to accepted policies and regulations.
+ Assists students in the development of desirable work habits, attitudes, and skills.
+ Prepares lesson plans in accordance with curriculum.
+ Meets with and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
+ Plans a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students.
+ Creates a classroom/career area environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of the students.
+ Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals.
+ In order to be successful in this position you will need to have knowledge and abilities in the following areas:
+ Knowledge of department functions, objectives, policies and programs.
+ Knowledge of curriculum development, classroom instruction, and educational planning.
+ Ability to teach Math at the middle school or secondary school level along with general education courses.
+ Ability to assess student needs and develop/modify instruction as necessary.
+ Ability to work effectively as an individual and as part of a team.
+ Ability to work with and manage at-risk youth.
+ Ability to provide necessary accommodations and modifications for growth and success of all students.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSA Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field.
Maine Teacher’s Certificate for appropriate subject and/or grade(s) as issued by the Department of Education.
In addition to the Physical Education and Health Certification this position will require a Special Education 282 endorsement
