Job Description

The CCS Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Clinical Chemistry Service, organizationally located within Histopathology Sciences of Scientific Services. This includes supervision of staff in CCS, workflow oversight, service delivery, curation of data and ensuring execution of and adherence to established SOPs and QA standards. The CCS Manager reports to the Senior Manager of Histopathology Sciences. This individual works with minimal supervision. The CCS Manager has daily contact with JAX faculty and research staff, multiple Services within Scientific Services as well as Project Managers and Directors within JMCRS (JAX West and JAX BH).This position is critical to the success of many programs at JAX.

Key Responsibilities & Essential Functions: Operations Management:
Oversee day-to-day operation of the Clinical Chemistry Service, tasking staff and monitoring workflow. Maintain and ensure a safe work environment. Includes the following:
1. Sample Management - Sample accessioning, sample assessment for quality, database management and sample tracking. Ensure QA/QC of all services and products in sample analysis as well as sample storage and inventory. Ensure adherence to SOPs. Maintain samples in required climate-controlled conditions; includes room temperature (RT), 4 deg. C,-4 deg. C, -80 deg. C. and LN2 storage.
2. Equipment Management - Oversee instrument operation and maintenance. Maintain equipment regularly, including daily validation and QC tests. Schedule regular preventative maintenance service calls and arrange for emergency service calls as needed.
3. Supplies Management - Ensure all necessary kits, reagents and other materials are on-hand and maintained in required climate-controlled conditions. This includes materials maintained at room temperature, 4 deg. C, -4 deg. C, -80 deg. C and LN2 storage. Set up necessary supply-chains as needed for direct and quick access to supplies.
4. Personnel Management - Provide staff with on-site training or arrange for off-site training with manufacturers as required. Establish work schedules and supervise staff. Evaluate performance and provide opportunities for professional development. Ensure staff maintain training and job-related certifications.

Service Delivery:
Carry out chemical, hematological and hormone analyses using CCS equipment. Perform all aspects of sample inventory including; collection assistance, inventory control, sample storage maintenance. Provide consultation services; develop and implement protocols for supporting user needs. Establish QA standards for sample analysis, sample storage and inventory services. Import, develop, validate and commission new methods and new instrumentation. Provide results; support data interpretation as needed. Consult with Clinical Veterinarians and Pathologists as needed.

The CCS Manager is responsible for the administrative oversight of CCS. This includes:
1. Financial Administration - Prepare annual operating budget and operate service within budget. Meet with Financial Analyst to develop new pricing as needed. Track and bill activities on a monthly basis. Prepare capital budget; update and review Five Year Capital plan annually. Evaluate and purchase capital equipment. Coordinate and oversee renovation plans with Facilities and JAX Engineers.
2. Personnel - Work actively with HR to advertise, interview and hire FTEs as needed. Provide and document orientation and training.
3. Documents and Reports - Prepare reports as required. Contribute to research grants and other publications as needed. Prepare SOPs, Job Descriptions (JD's), and other documents as needed. Ensure timely entry of data into databases. Conduct and submit performance reviews. 4.

Communicate with users regularly with regard to service updates, changes and other relevant information-using phone, email, virtual meetings, in-person meetings and other formats as appropriate. Maintain and update CCS website regularly. Approximately 25% effort.
Professional Development: Maintain professional currency through attendance at workshops, seminars, conferences and other continuing education classes. Use these skills to provide guidance or training to others (research staff, service staff). The CCS Manager may be asked to organize workshops or teleconferences and participate in courses and conferences. Perform other duties as needed.

Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Biology, Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science or related degree is required. A Master's degree in a related field or Finance (i.e. MBA) is not required but encouraged.
