Public Works Department – Up to $2,000 Sign On Bonus Available -

The Department of Public Works is seeking a highly responsible individual to fill the position of Fleet Operations Manager who will supervise and direct the performance of employees engaged in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of a variety of automotive equipment.  The Fleet Operations Manager will plan, schedule, assign and review the work of the Fleet Services staff, coordinate, monitor and provide technical input for fleet maintenance and repair projects and other special programs.  Work is performed under the general direction of the Fleet Manager.  This position supervises the Parts Manager, Service Writer, Fire Equipment Specialist, Vehicle Maintenance Foremen (Small Engines, Plow Bay and Machine/Weld Shop) and may oversee the work of the Police Mechanic.  Primary responsibilities include plan, schedule, supervise and review the work of all shop personnel; leads a team of Mechanics and Supervisors during snow events; ensures safety of shop employees through the use of personal protective equipment and best practices for maintaining a safe work environment; assists in adherence to environmental and storm water regulations that pertain to maintenance facility and fueling station operations; ensures readiness of seasonal equipment such as snow plows, street sweepers and turf equipment and communicates with Fleet Services customers to ensure operational needs are fulfilled; makes shop and road tests of equipment repaired before return to service; ensures productive working relationships among staff, customers and other employees; assists in specification writing; participates in evaluation of equipment for replacement; provides instruction to individuals and crews in terms of equipment usage and safety in accordance with local and state regulations; has skills with establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with the public, private sector contractors, City departments, supervisors and employees to effectively obtain satisfactory work output; utilizes a computerized maintenance management system to plan, schedule and report work and keeps detailed records and writes reports; assumes duties of the Fleet Manager in their absence; uses tact, initiative and independent judgment within general policy, procedural and legal guidelines; may be required to follow any other instructions and to perform any other related duties at the discretion of the Fleet Manager. 

Requirements:  Knowledge of Federal and State regulations pertaining to fleet operations and fueling; ability to prepare clear and concise oral and written reports; ability to utilize computer and programs related to fleet management, diagnostics, inventory, and finance, working knowledge of inventory procedures and recordkeeping; experience supervising skilled, semi-skilled and administrative personnel; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, other departments and the general public; ability to plan work schedules and undertake routine projects with minimum supervision; considerable knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools and machines of the various skilled mechanical trades; able to analyze statistical information; working knowledge of the types and capabilities of equipment used in municipal fleets, including City operations, and public safety equipment; experience using vehicle maintenance and preventive maintenance software; willingness to work a flexible work schedule; ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing; ability to become familiar with local repair shops and their abilities. 

Desired Experience and Training:  High School Diploma and five (5) years or more of progressively responsible experience in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of light and heavy duty automotive and truck equipment or any equivalent combination of education, experience and training. 

Necessary Special Requirements:  Must possess valid Maine Class B driver’s license or ability to obtain with six (6) months and must have and maintain a good driving record.  Must pass pre-employment drug test.  Offers of employment are contingent upon a satisfactory criminal background check. 

Non-Union – Grade C42 - Salary range:  $66,009 to $81,177 annually, based on education and experience.
