As a Public Health Nurse, you will provide public health nursing services to individuals, families, and population groups. Nursing actions are directed toward the goals of prevention, assessment, risk reduction, and health status improvement for individuals, families and communities. Nursing activities include, but are not limited to, systematic analysis of health data, care plan development, health education and advocacy, coalition building, and collaborating with community partners to promote the health of a population. As a Public Health Nurse, you will often collaborate and consult within multidisciplinary and multi-agency teams to achieve desirable outcomes for families and communities. Public Health Nursing interventions occur at individual, family, community and system levels depending upon the responsibilities of the position and the issues involved.
You will also:
• Use public health surveillance/disease investigation methods in community outreach, screening, and case finding of communicable and infectious diseases that threaten the health of the community.
• Document patient assessment and intervention data in medical records. Use established medical record forms, databases and documentation practices.
• Assume responsibility for own professional growth and development by pursuing education, participating in professional committees and work groups
• Apply the nursing process to individuals and families including health assessment, care plan development, implementation and evaluation, resource coordination, and/or referral to meet demonstrated health care needs.
• Plan, develop and coordinate client care with hospitals, medical providers, schools, and social services agencies to ensure necessary services are delivered.
• Practice, evidence-based Public Health Nursing to promote the health of individuals, families and groups.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:A three (3) year combination of training and experience which includes graduation from an approved nursing education program and 15 credit hours in psychology, sociology, nutrition, rehabilitation, or community health – AND – six (6) months of graduate nurse experience – OR – graduation from a four (4) year nursing education program.
LICENSING/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: (These must be met by all employees prior to attaining permanent status in the class).
Licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse as issued by the State Board of Nursing.
Preferred candidates will have:
• A desire to make a difference in Maine communities and identify emerging health concerns.
• Knowledge of public health programs, current nursing principles and practices, and nursing process.
• Knowledge of public health nursing laws, education, and administration.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and writing.
