Necropsy Technician

Job Description

This is an exciting opportunity to join a brand-new team. The necropsy technician will routinely perform detailed tissue collections as well as perform necropsies for the sick mouse program. The service is within the Comparative Medicine and Quality department located in our Bar Harbor, ME location.

Please note that hours will be M-F: 8:00 - 4:30, M-F

Necropsy technicians are responsible for performing tasks associated with mouse necropsy procedures to support the CMQ mouse health monitoring program and for collecting tissue samples to support In Vivo studies, JMCRS studies, and fulfill JMCRS tissue orders. The necropsy technician will also participate in routine laboratory maintenance and perform routine administrative tasks (project documentation).

Key Responsibilities:
Sample Collection & Preparation - perform gross necropsies and tissue collection procedures following established SOPs, RPs, and our quality assurance program. Perform tissue collections using a dissecting microscope and pass certification requirements as stipulated by the veterinarians for each type of tissue collected. Deliver samples to various departments (diagnostic lab, shipping, etc). Take and log images or x-rays as needed. Manage sample logs.
Laboratory & Waste Mgmt - clean and prep instruments, clean work areas and equipment, collecting waste in appropriate waste streams and contacting the EHS&S Dept. as needed for removal, order supplies, maintain inventory, prepare solutions.
Administrative/Professional Development - responsible for entering gross necropsy observations and project documentation and data into the departmental data management systems: Sample Tracker, iLabs, Axapta, multiple excel spreadsheets, and the developing Core Informatics Db. Contribute to service metrics. Attend staff meetings. Maintain professional development through attendance at relevant seminars, courses and workshops. Work with the veterinarians to become certified for each tissue collection and maintain those certifications as well as biomethods and safety training certifications

Qualifications:
High School Diploma/Equivalency.
ALAT (AALAS) Certification required or willingness to achieve certification.
Knowledge of mouse anatomy and experience in mouse handling, typically acquired through a minimum of one year's experience working with mice.
Computer Skills: Office 365 (Outlook, Word, and Excel) and capability to learn data management systems (Microsoft Teams, iLab, Axapta, Sample Tracker, etc.).
Detail-oriented, with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment while consistently maintaining a positive can-do attitude.
