Job Description

Pay:$17-20 per hour, Depending on Experience

Monday-Friday with autonomy in scheduling.

We are accepting entry level applicants!

The Iris Network is a non-profit located in Portland, ME servicing the entire State of Maine, as well as other states, to assists peoples with vision impairments gain and maintain independence as well as community integration.

We are looking for a Job Coach and a Manual Arts Instructor. The Job Coach accompanies clients/students to job sites throughout southern Maine and provides them with one on one coaching for the duration of their shift. Shifts should be 4 hours or less. Coaching can occur in a variety of settings from offices, to kitchens and once even a horse farm!

The other portion of the work is a Manual Arts Instructor. A Manual Arts Instructor is responsible for teaching a client/student hand to hand coordination through small projects and basic woodworking skills. Also, this position teaches basic home maintenance techniques to build confidence and support the client/student who wants to live independently. Basic home maintenance skills being how to flip a breaker switch in a fuse box, how to turn on and off a water valve, using fire extinguishers etc.

Job Coach Job Description

This position requires local travel to job site locations. The employee will not be transporting the client. The client will travel via taxi, bus or other means. The Job Coach must be beside the client providing direct support and guidance while on the job. Additionally, the Job Coach may help clients write their resume, practice interviewing skills and how to use technologies that can accommodate the clients individual needs on the job.

We will provide the Job Coach with training and a certification to help them be successful!

  • Develop and maintain a positive and supportive relationship with clients;
  • Conduct comprehensive intakes to assists clients with understanding and exploring their needs, strengths, interest, aptitudes, experiences and capabilities;
  • Collaborate with clients to develop a plan which outlines their short-term and long-term employment goals that align with their skills, interests and preferences;
  • Create an individualized teaching plan;
  • Document progress towards goals and provide guidance;
  • Introduce clients to technologies to assist them with adapting to a workplace setting and provide them with training on how to utilize them;
  • Keep current with the most effective tools and adaptive devices and make appropriate recommendations on acquiring them;
  • Travel to client work sites to work alongside clients in the workplace setting to ensure success in adapting to the setting;
  • Provide onsite guidance to clients regarding workplace behavior and professionalism;
  • Prepare and maintain student case records and data;
  • Perform work in accordance with contracts and grant funding in a professional and timely manner;
  • Exemplify the Code of Conduct, Professional Standards and Ethical behaviors to act as a role model for clients;
  • Maintain professional boundaries and provide support, guidance and feedback to clients;
  • Participate in and identify opportunities for professional development;
  • Work closely and maintain strong professional relationships with managers and peers across the agency;
  • Adhere to The Iris Network safety standards and procedures;
  • Other duties as assigned.

anual Arts Job Description

The Manual Arts Instructor is responsible for instilling confidence, providing a safe environment with direct instruction focusing on the client learning how to manage home maintenance, use household tools and manual arts techniques through construction and assembly of simple projects.

Job Duties:

  • Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests;
  • Observe students to determine qualifications, limitations, abilities, interests, and other individual characteristics;
  • Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicate those objectives to students;
  • Review instructional content, methods, and student evaluations to assess strengths and weaknesses, and to develop recommendations for course revision, development, or elimination;
  • Use computers, audio-visual aids, and other equipment and materials to supplement presentations;
  • Adhere to all The Iris Networks policies and procedures;
  • Other duties as assigned.





  • High school diploma or GED required. Associates degree preferred;
  • 1-3 years of experience in employment services or related field, a plus!;
  • Previous experience working/volunteering with people with disabilities, strongly preferred;
  • Access to reliable transportation and ability to set up reliable transportation for clients as needed;
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs.;
  • Ability to bend, stand, lift, crouch and work overhead.
  • Associates degree in a related field OR 1-3 years of relatable experience (wood working experience, basic home maintenance);
  • Previous teaching experience, preferred;
  • Knowledge of basic manual arts techniques, tools and safety procedures required;
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs.;
  • Ability to bend, stand, lift, crouch and work overhead.
