Job Description

Summary

The Jackson Laboratory (JAX), a nonprofit biomedical research organization based in Bar Harbor, ME, is looking for an experienced User Experience (UX) Designer to join our Computational Sciences team. The Designer will design custom software systems supporting research data access and visualization.

The User Experience (UX) Designer leads the design of computational research systems and custom software delivered to internal and external users, and is responsible for delivering improved technology usability for research and data governance.

Responsibilities
Design delightful user experiences to support the leading edge of biomedical research.
Understand the needs of users, explore solutions to key research priorities, prototype possibilities, and evaluate the impact of your designs.
Help in the preparation of and conduct various types of user research including direct interviews of research faculty, computational researchers, external customers, and various stakeholders.
Facilitate collaborative design thinking activities to understand what people need, explore options, and evaluate possible solutions.
Create appropriate design artifacts such as journey maps, user personas, empathy maps, storyboards, stakeholder maps, and assessments.
Perform analysis of user research and collect data from internal and external sources.
Create visual designs through use of layouts, colors, and illustrations using modern design tools and techniques.
Support the development of digital experiences that are responsive and adaptive leveraging knowledge of emerging technologies and UI frameworks.
Collaborate to create and communicate designs that are going to be impactful and attainable.

Qualifications
Level I:  College diploma or university degree in the field of design, visual design, or digital/software design preferred; one year of internship, co-op, or similar experience required, if no college/university degree.
Level II: 3+ years of experience relating to user experience design, visual design, or digital/software design.
Experience with data visualization is a plus, as is some hands-on, front-end development work to ensure that designs are maintainable.
Familiarity with tools and techniques to drive collaborative design, communications, prototyping, and visual representations of user experience.
Understanding of and experience facilitating design activities.
Effective written, oral, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.
Experience working effectively in a fast-paced team environment, as well as forward-looking development to address changes and challenges.
Self-motivation, proactivity, dedication and drive to succeed and contribute to team success.
Strong interpersonal, professional, and relationship-building skills and ability to maintain a positive and professional demeanor in all situations to effectively work with a diverse workforce.
