Job Description

The Trowbridge Lab is seeking a Research Assistant III to learn the context and implications of the laboratory's research programs, applying and interpreting theoretical knowledge necessary to conduct primary basic and translational research in hematopoietic stem cell biology, aging and blood cancers. The range of duties includes, but is not limited to: project planning, experimental design, developing methodology, conducting procedures, data collection and analysis, assisting in the preparation of publications and reports. Incumbents must demonstrate and model effective mental concentration, visual attention and manipulative skills. Incumbents are required to work flexible shifts that may include evenings, week-ends and/or holidays depending on the demands of the research and/or laboratory operations.

Key Responsibilities
Research Assistant III:
Demonstrates scientific knowledge and analytical skills to monitor, modify, and design the research process. Designs, modifies, and troubleshoots highly specialized equipment.
Analyzes and resolves variations in complex tests, experiments and procedures; designs and implements modifications and changes to techniques, procedures and quality control measures
Performs cell culture experiments, while maintaining a sterile cell culture environment and equipment, and following all safety protocols.
Collects tissue from mice.
Collects and analyzes experimental data. Keeps clear records of experiments in a lab notebook and electronically.
Proposes alternative research methods, techniques and initiatives demonstrating knowledge of other scientific areas and related research.
Independently expands scope of literature search to support and/or propose alternative experimental methods, procedures and/or techniques.
Gathers information to prepare budget for acquisition of supplies and equipment.
Leads multiple, concurrent projects; collaborates with others; instructs others in carrying out experiments.
Understands research goals thoroughly; can instruct and inform others about past and future research directives. Also coordinates with outside collaborators to open new avenues of research.
The RA III may have direct supervisory responsibilities and is accountable to insure the effective training and development program for assigned personnel.
Train laboratory staff members in new and existing SOPs.

Bachelor's or Master's degree in biological sciences or related discipline OR 6 + years of
related experience
Mouse handling and husbandry skills preferred
Fundamental computer skills, including familiarity with Excel and Word
Ability to clearly and concisely communicate information verbally and in written form.
Ability to demonstrate effective mental concentration, visual attention and dexterity
Ability to interact with all individuals in a productive, professional and positive manner to enhance the outcome of the goals of the research program
Established understanding of good safety practices and a demonstrated history of safe conduct
Proven ability to organize time effectively and work under time constraints, meet deadlines and prioritize work
Ability to work flexible shifts (evening/week-end/holiday)
Regular, reliable and consistent attendance
