Job Description

WIC Registered Dietitians work closely with Nutrition Coordinators to provide quality nutrition services to medically high-risk WIC participants, acting as agency experts in nutrition and infant formulas. In addition to Registered Dietitian responsibilities, the person in this position is responsible for determining eligibility and nutrition risk priority of WIC applicants, conducting dietary assessments and physiological measurements, and providing orientation to WIC participants. Primary job duties include providing counseling and education on proper nutrition and good health, with special emphasis on nutritional needs of pregnant, postpartum, and breast-feeding women and infants and children less than 5 years of age. This person will also oversee and conduct regular outreach and retention efforts including setting up and conducting some offsite and evening clinics.

Other duties include:

  • making referrals on immunizations, prenatal care, smoking, drug and alcohol cessation, and health checkups;
  • documenting and maintaining data on client orientation, participation, and satisfaction with the program;
  • maintaining clinic equipment and supplies, such as measuring devices, diapers, electric breast pumps, and infant formula.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in nutritional sciences, community or public health nutrition, or a health-related field from an accredited college or university and at least 2 years of experience in a similar position.
  • An equivalent combination of experience and an associate degree in nutritional sciences or similar field will be considered. Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Preferred.
  • One year of experience providing breast-feeding counseling to new mothers and nutrition counseling to parents and children 0-5 years of age preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with computers and related word processing, spreadsheet and database software, maintain accurate electronic records, and generate reports
  • Ability to communicate clearly in oral and written form
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality of all client and agency information
  • Ability to sit for long periods and work in a variety of busy clinic environments; able to lift 20 poundsOther Requirements
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license, adequate automobile insurance per state standards, and access to reliable transportation; compliance with MMCA policies pertaining to safe vehicle operation required.
  • Prior to starting employment, must be able to pass fingerprinted criminal background, child protective services, sex offender registry, and motor vehicle record checks, as required by state and federal childcare licensing regulations, that indicate no previous record of involvement with child abuse or exploitation and no disqualifying criminal or motor vehicle record that would preclude working with children.  
  • Persons offered employment must also provide a physician’s health statement, immunization records, and TB screening.  Proof of full vaccination against COVID is required as a condition of employment unless exemption for medical or religious reasons is requested and approved in accordance with law.

Upon hire and periodically thereafter must have background check results that are satisfactory to Midcoast Maine Community Action and indicate no previous or current record of involvement with child abuse, neglect or exploitation and no disqualifying criminal record or motor vehicle record.
