Job Description

As a leader in the search for cures for human disease, the Jackson Laboratory is looking a Director in Health and Safety Services to lead comprehensive environmental safety and health programs at all JAX sites and facilities!

Key Responsibilities:

Overall facility safety encompassing industrial hygiene, health physics and radiation safety, bio-safety, environmental protection and waste management, regulatory compliance, for all JAX facilities. The Director will drive accountability of health and safety management in their respective sites and facilities by advising local management on providing proactive customer/client centric hands on service to promote, foster and support a leadership driven injury free culture while ensuring compliance with applicable Laboratory policies and local, state and federal regulations.

Securing, through agreements or contracts Employee Health Services providing management of occupational health protection, medical surveillance programs, comprehensive health and safety incident reporting programs, and the development and delivery of documented safety/health training programs.

Collaboration with Human Resources for the effective management of workers' compensation program, medical case management and modified duty programs and to the extent that non-occupational health programs can be effectively delivered within the scope of the Employee Health practice to complement general health and wellness initiatives.

Leading efforts in Emergency Response Plan development and implementation including exercise planning, deficiency reporting and corrective action management. Individual site plans and the Institutional plan will all be tested at least annually through quarterly exercises.

Lead and develop personnel to deliver effective coverage and support of all health and safety services programs in a proactive customer centric manner.

Lead the development and delivery of efficient/effective occupational health protection, medical surveillance programs, documented safety/health training programs, and comprehensive health and safety incident reporting.

Manage the current EHSS programs for a production and laboratory research based organization with attention towards identifying opportunities to improve operational efficiencies and their successful development, enhancement and implementation as needed.

Work in collaboration with the appropriate Laboratory and external groups/agencies to develop, implement and exercise the Laboratory's various emergency response plans.

Build relationships within the Laboratory community and partner with all levels of leadership to promote a culture of health & safety for the successful implementation of Environmental Health & Safety programs and corresponding employee learning and training safety initiatives.

Qualifications Include:

Masters Degree and 10 years of relevant experience in a production or research lab based environment.

Current knowledge of federal, state and local safety regulations, protocols, and/or procedures and direct hands on exposure to a subset of occupational health and safety programs such as chemical, radiation, hazardous waste, fire, construction, environmental, etc.

Effective verbal and written communication skills including analytical skills for summarizing and presenting data in a logical, clear and concise manner.

Ability to successfully execute, manage, prioritize and delegate projects; remain calm and effective in emergency or difficult situations; and to exercise fiscal responsibility in planning, develop and working within budget.

Advanced interpersonal relationship skills sufficient to allow for developing complex dynamic relationships with a diverse variety of individuals representing a broad cross section of cultures, disciplines and levels of sophistication both internal and external to the Laboratory.

Ability to communicate effectively with others in writing and verbally to clearly effective exchange information with people representing a wide diversity of disciplines and levels of sophistication including but not limited to internal clientele but officials of local, state and regulatory agencies.

Ability to motivate and lead others toward accomplishment of individual and shared objectives with the goal to create a leadership driven injury-free culture.

Ability to patiently and persistently align health and safety efforts.
