The Bowdoin College Investments Office is recruiting a full time, pre- MBA , Investment Associate. The role is a two-to three-year position supporting the investment team out of its office in New York City. The Investments Office is responsible for managing Bowdoin’s $2.8 billion endowment, which funds a substantial portion of the College’s spending. The investment performance of Bowdoin’s endowment has historically been at or near the top of all colleges and universities in the US.

The Investment Associate will report to the Director of Investments and be a key member of a small team tasked with managing a sophisticated, global portfolio of investments across asset classes, including public equities, venture capital, private equity, hedge funds, and real estate. Bowdoin’s investment team is collaborative, research oriented, and performance driven. The team reports to the Chief Investment Officer, President of the College, and Bowdoin’s Investment Committee. The Investment Associate will participate in Investment Committee meetings and may have an opportunity to formally present in a group setting.

Responsibilities include monitoring existing investment manager relationships, diligencing new ideas, and performing in-depth analysis on exposures, performance, and risk measures. The Associate will frequently participate in meetings with existing and prospective investment managers. The Investments Office does not invest in or select securities, assets, or companies directly, but rather allocates capital to best-in-class investment management firms to generate attractive long-term returns for the College.

After working in the Investments Office, the Associate should be well-positioned to attend an MBA program or move directly to another endowment, foundation, or family investment office in a more senior capacity.

Education/Skills Requirements

A Bachelor’s degree is required, with undergraduate coursework in finance, economics, accounting and/or data science considered especially valuable. Applicants must possess excellent oral and written communication skills, and have experience presenting to senior leadership. Applicants should be skilled in building advanced models in Excel and have comfort with organizing, synthesizing, and distilling data in an efficient, user-friendly manner in PowerPoint or Word. Strong attention to detail is essential. Familiarity with Bloomberg, S&P Capital IQ, and other relevant software tools is helpful. Candidates must be comfortable working both independently and on a small team, and excited to assist on a range of ad hoc tasks and projects, often with tight timelines. A passion for investing, financial markets, and Bowdoin’s educational mission are prerequisites. Thinking creatively about information gathering, data analytics, novel ways of presenting insights, and more efficient ways of operating is strongly encouraged. Domestic and international travel is required once COVID -19 restrictions are lifted.

Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents

Successful applicants will have a minimum of one year work experience in investment banking, equity research, management consulting, or investment management.

Standard Work Days and Hours

Monday – Friday 8:30 am – 5:00 pm. This is an exempt position and requires the time commitment necessary to fulfill all of the job responsibilities.
