Primary Responsibilities

HDR is looking for a Project Engineer to join our Ports and Maritime practice group in New England. This position may be based out of one of the following offices: Boston, MA, Manchester, NH, Portland, ME or Glastonbury, CT. They will perform individually and in a team environment designing small to large projects (construction values typically from $500K to $100M) with a primary focus on structural, geotechnical, and general civil design elements. Their primary responsibility will involve performing design tasks on projects ranging in scope from limited complexity to those involving complex features and multiple disciplines. Efforts will be guided by senior level engineers. Duties will include:

Performance of analyses, calculations, and other related design tasks to produce constructible/practical plans, details, and technical specifications

Production of documents including studies/reports, details, sketches, construction drawings, and opinions of cost

Construction field observations to verify general conformance with contract documents

Active participation in a technical organization(s) relative to the industry and/or assistance (co-authoring) in publication of technical articles will be a secondary expectation of this role.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor or Masters degree in Civil and/or Structural Engineering (or foreign equivalent)

PE license or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire

5+ years of experience relative to description above. This must include the following:

report writing

structural analysis

design calculations

detailing of timber, concrete and steel structures

Strong oral and written communications skills will be required for interaction between design and production staff, peers, and management

Knowledge and ability to use AutoCAD and Microsoft Office software is also required

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with finite element modeling of staged construction and nonlinear foundations; soil mechanics and soil/structure interaction; and analysis and design of lateral force resisting systems

Current knowledge of linear and non-linear structural analysis and soil-structure interaction analysis and design software is mandatory (examples of relevant software include; RISA 3D or SAP 2000, GROUP, LPILE, CWALSHT)

Previous design experience with heavy industrial and ports and maritime related projects along with construction observation or administration experience and/or evidence of other mechanical aptitude.
