Summary

The Director, Research IT Clinical and Lab Informatics IT Services, is responsible for ensuring the technical stability and financial sustainability of the portfolio of clinical and lab informatics research platforms, applications, and data systems in alignment with the strategic goals of The Jackson Laboratory. The Director also provides vision and leadership in the platform selection and development of platform solutions that drive operational excellence and successful operational and research outcomes in support of The Jackson Laboratory's strategic goals.

 

The Director is responsible for the strategy and vision for overseeing the delivery, integration, unification and support of informatics and clinical platforms and solutions that align with the strategic goals of The Jackson Laboratory.

 

The Director works with the IT leadership team, including the CIO, IT directors, managers and leads, Faculty, Scientific Directors, Finance, and Research Advancement groups to support Research IT initiatives and planning; to support cross-IT process improvements and initiatives; to support mission critical IT research and clinical operations; to contribute to strategy development and technology architectural decisions required to keep The Jackson Laboratory on the leading edge of computational technologies; to support information security initiatives; to uphold information security policies; and to advance shared goals. Working closely with the CIO and peer IT Directors, this individual prepares the clinical and lab informatics area operating and capital budgets and forecasts and is responsible for proper stewardship of the funds and expenses.

 

Responsibilities

Strategy & Planning: Contribute to IT and JAX-wide strategic planning and prioritization efforts; Collaborate with peer IT Directors, Faculty, Research Leadership, Finance Leadership and CIO to ensure alignment, to resolve roadblocks, and to ensure high degree of communication

Platform and Application Portfolio Management: Oversight of clinical and informatics research platforms and application portfolios including technology lifecycle and technical debt. Define and communicate initiative milestones, service level agreements, and resource allocation to executive team, department leads, support staff, and end users. Develop and review budgets and ensure they comply with stated objectives. Review performance of IT systems to determine operating costs, productivity levels, and upgrade requirements. Benchmark, analyze metrics, and make recommendations for the improvement of IT systems to meet research needs. Ensure key performance indicator metrics are developed, monitored, analyzed, and communicated to faculty and leadership for subsequent continuous improvement.

Clinical Services and Systems Management: Develop and implement best practices related to clinical operations systems and research assay and clinical data systems suitable for a world class research institution.

Staff Management: Management and oversight of informatics support and development and clinical teams. Perform organization design, job description development, recruiting and hiring; Manage IT staff for excellent performance through supervision, scheduling, development through training and coaching, evaluation, accountability, and disciplinary actions. Develop leadership, technical management, and strategic planning competencies within team members from managers to individual contributors. Develop agile and education methodology skills, processes, and culture. Manages special projects and initiatives. Perform other duties as required.

 

Qualifications

Master's degree or PhD in information technology, computational biology or related technical field

10+ years of clinical and/or informatics experience and research IT experience with advanced knowledge and experience developing IT staff and IT organizations

5+ years demonstrated success in management or leadership role with increasing responsibility within an IT, clinical or computational research function

5+ years leading complex teams, maturing research, clinical and informatics capabilities, and developing research support skill sets for clinical, lab informatics and computational systems development and systems maintenance

Experience with clinical and informatics systems design and development from business requirements analysis through to day-to-day management in a complex research environment.

Knowledge of business theory, business processes, management, budgeting, and business office operations

Demonstrated ability to apply IT and scientific knowledge in solving research and business problems. In-depth knowledge of applicable laws and regulations as they relate to IT. (PCI, CLIA, HIPAA, GxP)
