Answer yes to any of these and you'll fit right in at The Jackson Laboratory. The Information Technology department is seeking a full time System Engineer focusing on cloud computing. You'll be part of an organization whose IT technology is as exciting and progressive as our science. We are currently looking for motivated individuals who will work with our science and business stakeholders, application development teams, and other IT staff to design, configure, and implement efficient system services in support of The Jackson Laboratory mission.
Under the general direction of a team leader or senior management, manages a complex site or network. Establishes/recommends policies on system use and services. Provides technical leadership to system administrators or others of equivalent seniority.
Propose, create, and validate system design models, specifications, diagrams, and charts to provide direction to system programmer and development teams for integrating systems, including database, e-mail, print, and backup servers and their associated software into enterprise systems. Review the current enterprise architecture to identify weaknesses and opportunities for improvement using cloud solutions.
Act as project lead in the design and implementation of new server systems and applications and gauge the effectiveness and efficiency of existing systems; develop and implement strategies for improving or further leveraging these systems. These may be on premise or cloud based (Azure).
Perform system and security audits, system backup procedures, and other recovery processes in accordance with the company's disaster recovery and business continuity strategies.
Create and maintain documentation as it relates to system configuration, mapping, processes, and service records. Knowledge share regularly with team.
Conduct research on software and systems products to justify recommendations and to support purchasing efforts, and interact and negotiate with vendors, outsourcers, and contractors to secure system-related products and services.
Ensure system uptime of on-premise and cloud based servers, shared software, enterprise applications. Keep abreast of emerging technologies and evaluate vendor offerings to determine best fit for business needs.
Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field with at least 7 years in a systems engineering role. Additional experience in equivalent systems engineering work may substitute for the degree requirement but will be evaluated in a case-by-case basis.
Advanced experience in server virtualization, hyperconverged technologies, high-availability clusters and, system performance tuning of on premise and cloud technologies (AWS, Azure, or GCP) with best practice security considerations.
Extensive experience with Microsoft and/or Linux (CentOS, RedHat) operating systems. Specialization in either Microsoft or Linux is acceptable but experience in both is highly desired.
Working technical knowledge of disaster recovery planning and configurations
Extensive experience configuring and supporting public cloud subscriptions (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
Extensive support experience for enterprise applications including e-mail and messaging, database, virtualization, application delivery systems, security software and monitoring.
Experience in the technology implementation of security and privacy standards for industry and federal regulations including Payment Card Industry and HIPAA
Advanced knowledge in parallel computing systems including High Performance Compute clusters, symmetrical processing systems and other scale-out and scale-up systems.
Working technical knowledge of Storage Area Network, Scale-out Network Attached Storage systems, Tape Libraries and data switches and data center operations.
Working technical knowledge of server programming languages and scripting in a Microsoft and Unix environment, systems integration mechanisms and protocols, network services including DNS and DHCP, authentication systems including certificate services, Kerberos and Radius
Knowledgeable in network switching and routing, load balancing, firewall and Intrusion detection and prevention systems.
Industry certifications for contemporary technologies including Microsoft, VMWare and Citrix and practical application of the technologies in a research, manufacturing, or business environment. AZ-500 for example.
