MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN– FACILITIES DEPARTMENT- CUMBERLAND COUNTY JAIL

Picturesque Cumberland County is the State’s most populous county having a population of 289,977. Its largest city is Portland and the county geographically extends from Casco Bay to the Lakes Region. Cumberland County has the second largest body of water in the state, Sebago Lake, which provides numerous recreational opportunities. The County is the economic and industrial center of the state, having a strong corporate presence of major domestic and international companies.  The County has over 350 dedicated employees, all focused on providing the best customer service to the County residents.  Cumberland County is represented by five elected county commissioners and the county manager runs the daily operations.

JOB PURPOSE:  Maintains building environment and accessibility by maintaining all equipment and systems used in the operation of county buildings at Jail Complex. Light custodial duties.

KEY EXPECTED RESULTS:

  1. Maintains building climate by installing, repairing, and servicing heating, ventilating and air conditioning equipment.
  2. Maintains equipment by installing and repairing associated and back up equipment and systems.
  3. Constructs, repairs and installs structures or fixtures by marking, cutting, and assembly lines on materials; shaping materials to measurements, assembling and fastening cut and shaped materials; using carpenter’s hand tools, power tools and woodworking machinery.
  4. Maintains buildings internally and externally by preparing surfaces for application of paint or stain; applying paint or stain by using brushes, rollers, or by other means; cleaning up spilled paint or stain; cleaning and maintaining paint equipment; properly storing or disposing of excess paint or stain.
  5. Maintains county buildings by performing welding, masonry, boiler, roofing, electrical, plumbing, and other work as assigned.
  6. Maintains safe and clean working environment by ensuring all work areas are returned to the highest level of cleanliness, free of all tools, parts and equipment before leaving the job site.
  7. Assures quality maintenance program by completing and/or updating all work orders for completed work.
  8. Assures proper maintenance of all equipment by maintaining and updating the maintenance schedule.
  9. Assists departments by receiving and delivering maintenance supplies.
  10. Assures adequate supplies by assisting in the maintenance of all routine replacement parts and updates parts inventories.
  11. Assures adequate security by assisting in the maintenance of security and accounting of all tools, keys and/or sundries.
  12. Assures quality maintenance performance by informing supervisor of problem areas in need of repair.
  13. Provide a safe and harmonious environment for staff and residents by coordinating maintenance activities with other department shift supervisors.
  14. Removes snow and ice as necessary, including participating on the on call snow removal rotation list, by plowing, snow-blowing, shoveling, and chopping.
  15. Provides quality maintenance by being responsible for HVAC and environmental control systems.
  16. Assures safety and security by overseeing subcontractors while working with the county buildings.

 

  1. Maintains safe working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
  2. May utilize inmate labor once properly trained.
  3. Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
  4. Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  5. Demonstrates an understanding of the county’s safety policies and practices by attending required safety programs; reporting all accidents and suspected safety hazards to supervisor.
  6. Fulfills job function by participating as an active member in training; participating on county task forces and performing other responsibilities as assigned.
  7. On call every 4th or 5th week depending on personnel count.

 QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Vocational schooling in various maintenance programs.
  • Valid State of Maine drivers’ license required.
  • Must be capable of using a computer.
  • Four (4) years commercial/industrial experience or combination of vocational school and two (2) years of experience and training.
  • Experience in plumbing, electrical carpentry, painting, HVAC, hardware, and structural.
