Health and Human Services Department – Barron Center –

The Barron Center, the City of Portland's long term care facility located on Brighton Avenue, is seeking an experienced maintenance worker to work within its team to perform a wide variety of skilled maintenance work. The ideal candidate will be capable of doing repairs and service on boilers, heating and ventilation systems, change and install lighting, perform outdoor landscaping, carpentry, brick masonry, plumbing and other maintenance tasks on the Barron Center campus.  Working knowledge of the functions and operating methods of a wide variety of heavy and complex construction equipment used for various maintenance related projects on our campus will be needed, as well as the ability to participate in winter operations. The knowledge of hazards and of applicable safety rules and regulations regarding the equipment; ability to construct a safe and efficient work zone; works safely, effectively and courteously in or around the residents and employees of the Barron Center.  Winter operations will require the ability to participate by responding to on- call work on a rotating basis and potentially work overtime to complete removal and have the ability to safely operate snow clearing equipment. This position requires the ability to respond to work orders and requests via computer and perform the desired tasks; operates specialty tools and perform job tasks as required; good visual acuity for driving and the physical strength, agility and stamina to withstand exposure to adverse climatic conditions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors and the general public; ability to work various shifts as required.  Current shift available: Monday through Friday 7:00-3:30 PM. 

Desired Experience: Experience using heavy equipment such as dump trucks, loaders and ability to fix construction equipment; knowledge of and ability to operate winter equipment and be qualified as a one-person operator; previous plumbing experience.  Requirements: Must be high school graduate or equivalent; must have valid Maine Class B license; must have and maintain a good driving record; pass a pre-employment physical and fitness assessment.  Offers of employment are contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory criminal background check.  Pay range starting at $802/week, with contractual pay step increases and excellent benefit package to include 12 paid holidays.
