Backyard Farms, located in Madison, ME is a 42-acre greenhouse, that we like to think of as one big backyard garden! Our spacious facility grows tomatoes year-round. We are seeking a Biosecurity Specialist to assist the Sanitation Team in minimizing the spread of pathogens inside the growing & packing facilities. 

This position will be responsible for all assigned sanitation activities that support and maintain company sanitation standard operating procedures and applicable regulatory food safety guidelines, to include minimizing the spread of mechanically transferred pathogens such as ToBRFV or CGMMV by ensuring facility virus controls are achieved within the guidelines set forth by Mastronardi Produce. This individual is responsible for a wide variety of duties including but not limited to this job description. 

 

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Maintains sanitation washroom in a hygienic condition, operates all equipment safely and according to established guidelines.
  • Handles and mixes cleaning and sanitizing chemicals as prescribed on manufacturer’s label
  • Cleans and sanitizes greenhouse equipment in a manner that protects against contamination of tomatoes and tomato plants
  • Monitors equipment and supplies to properly support the completion of departmental tasks. Trains and supports departmental and non-departmental employees when necessary
  • Cleans pack-house, cooler, and common area floors daily
  • Performs scheduled cleaning of pack-house
  • Removes broken glass in accordance with procedure
  • Maintains cut glove inventory daily by sorting and stocking
  • Cleans and drains dumpsters as needed
  • Provide support to housekeeping and sanitation room
  • Trains and supports departmental and non-departmental employees as needed
  • Conduct daily audits of the facilities biosecurity program 
  • Conduct daily GMP/GAP compliance inspections of employee practices 
  • Maintain records in accordance with the biosecurity program 
  • Conduct training on procedures and policies related to the biosecurity program 
  • Report all non-conformances to management 
  • Ensure all PPE and Checkpoint stations are full, stocked, and labeled  
  • Chemical titration inspections and accuracy checks/monitoring 
  • Help facilitate the development and growth of the biosecurity program  
  • Pest Control
  • Performs other duties as needed
Education/Background Requirements:
  • High School diploma or GED required

 

 

Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
  • One to three-year(s) experience in the sanitation field
  • GMP, GAP and HACCP certified; if not within the first 12 months of employment.
  • Understand company specific job-related applications of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration
  • Understand job specific applications of GMPs
  • Understands and applies proper cleaning and sanitizing practices
  • Understand company Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures
  • Understand basic operational and preventive maintenance of dispensers
  • Must be able to work independently and follow instructions as given
  • Requires strong verbal/written communications skills 
  • Requires strong interpersonal skills 
  • Self-Motivated, positive attitude, work independently 
  • Ability to be forklift and donkey trained

 

Working Conditions:
  • May work near moving equipment
  • Position requires repetitive motion, sitting, standing, walking, twisting, squatting, stooping and bending on a         regular basis.   Limited crawling and kneeling
  • Must be able to lift or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Must have manual dexterity to perform computer skills
