Spectrum Healthcare Partners is Maine’s largest multi-specialty, physician-owned and directed professional organization and is comprised of over 200 physicians practicing in the areas of pathology, anesthesiology, orthopaedics, pain management, radiation oncology, radiology, and vascular & interventional services. Spectrum provides services at many of Maine’s hospitals throughout the state and in eastern New Hampshire. We are seeking a full time Pathologists’ Assistant to join our team of 26 pathologists and 10 pathologists’ assistants. Job Summary Under the supervision of a pathologist, this position assists with all aspects of surgical specimen processing, frozen section preparation, and post mortem examination performed at various sites of service. This position is based in Portland, Maine at Maine Medical Center, Maine’s largest medical center; travel to Scarborough Surgery Center, HOURS: Monday-Friday (day shift) with rotating Saturday coverage.

Responsibilities and Duties 1. Surgical Pathology – Perform gross examination and proper tissue selection on a variety of specimens including breast, gynecologic, gastrointestinal and genitourinary oncology. Perform gross photography as requested. Grossing technicians assist with biopsies and level I and II specimens. 2. Intraoperative Consultation – Frozen sections, touch preps and gross margin status with proper information and tissue selection provided to the pathologist. Laboratory assistants aid with cutting and staining. 3. Special Protocols – Complete required paperwork and triage tissue for specialized protocols, including, renal biopsies, muscle biopsies, pediatric tumor protocols, cytogenetic requests, gout processing, extraction of radioactive seeds from breast lumpectomies, and lymphoma work-ups. 4. Autopsy Pathology – Performance of Post Mortem examinations to include review of appropriate documentation, permits, and history. Functions include external examination, organ inspection and gross description, evisceration, dissection, gross photography, data entry, and completion of the Preliminary Anatomic Diagnosis report. Submission of diagnostic tissue needed for microscopic examination or special studies. 5. Tissue Banking – Assist the Maine Medical Center Research Institute BioBank with tissue collection and slide review of fresh and archived collections. 6. Designated Projects -Develop and complete individual projects to fulfill requirements toward annual incentive compensation (bonus). Opportunities include QA data collection and reporting, education, tissue collection for special studies and validations, departmental policy and procedure improvements, etc. Qualifications and Skills •Master’s degree granted by an NAACLS-accredited pathologists’ assistant training program preferred •Pathologists’ Assistant (ASCP) certification or Exam eligible required •Ability to work independently and as a member of a team •Proficient computer skills to include Power Path, Microsoft Office, VoiceBrook, MModal, EPIC •Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with strong relationship-building skills •Dedicated to the highest quality patient care •Ability to maintain confidentiality Physical Demands/ Work Environment •Continuous exposure to infectious materials and/or toxic and hazardous chemicals with risks minimized by the use of universal precautions and personal protective devices •May be required to stand or sit for long periods of time •Manual dexterity and visual acuity when handling specimens and utilizing instrumentation •Travel to various sites of clinical service may be required Benefits and Perks
