PUBLIC WORKS FOREMAN – Streets & Sidewalks

Public Works Department – Schedule will be first shift to start and then will be subject to winter shift assignment based on seniority.  This is a working Foreman position that includes supervisory work involving the direction of crews of semi-skilled and skilled workers engaged in municipal construction, maintenance and repair operations, as well as sanitation and traffic operations and covers Dispatch duties.  Work assignments may involve the development of a specific area of expertise and knowledge, including but not limited to municipal grounds, street maintenance and repair, minor vehicle repairs and sanitation operations.  This position will work under the general direction of a Senior Supervisor and the Streets and Sidewalks Coordinator.  This position will fill in as Senior Supervisor in the absence of the Senior Supervisor and during winter operations.  Requirements:   Considerable knowledge of materials, methods and techniques commonly used in street, sidewalk and grounds maintenance and construction activities and of the hazards and application safety precautions of work; working knowledge of construction and maintenance techniques of construction equipment and of fundamental training methods and techniques; ability to supervise and direct the activities of employees engaged in the operation of such equipment; working knowledge of accident investigation and reporting; working knowledge of the operation of equipment around energized lines; working knowledge of traffic operations, to include but not limited to sign installation and repair and line painting; proven ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, using radios, telephones, computers; ability to read engineering plans for road, sewer or facility construction operations and to follow prescribed methods; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, private sector contractors, City departments, supervisors and employees to effectively obtain satisfactory work output; promotes harmonious relationships with members of the work crew and represents the Department in a professional and positive manner at all times; ability to keep records and prepare reports; ability to work in various climatic conditions; performs winter operations as required.  Desired training and experience will include high school graduate or any equivalent combination of experience and training; experience in construction, maintenance and repair of streets, sidewalks, grounds and other facilities; and knowledge of principles, practices, equipment and techniques used in general maintenance and repair work.  Necessary Special Requirements:  Must possess valid State of Maine Class B driver’s license; must have and maintain a good driving record; must pass federally mandated drug test then will be susceptible to random drug testing; offers of employment are contingent upon the completion of a successful criminal background check.  Pay range starting at $848.80/week.
