Job Description

Cognitive resilience is remarkable feature of the brain, allowing some individuals to maintain normal memory despite the presence of Alzheimer's disease pathology. The Kaczorowski Lab at The Jackson Laboratory is seeking a Research Assistant II/III to contribute to developing the first in vitro 3D cell culture system for cellular resilience assessments and resilience targets drug screens. The successful candidate will have strong experience in cellular and molecular biology, will be required to culture and maintain primary and transformed cells, extract and assess quality of DNA/RNA, perform PCR/qPCR, western blots, immunohistochemistry, ELISA techniques, and will provide technical support for all projects, including next-generation library preparation and genome editing techniques.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Research Assistant II:

Performs cell culture experiments, while maintaining a sterile cell culture environment and equipment, and following all safety protocols.

Collects tissue from mice.

Collects and analyzes experimental data. Keeps clear records of experiments in a lab notebook and electronically.

Identifies problems, troubleshoots and analyzes results from cell culture experiments; modifies, refines or adapts techniques and procedures.

Plans and monitors resources needed to perform cell culture experiments; maintains inventory of reagents using online software; coordinates use of space and equipment.

Assists in grant writing and proposal development.

Is collaborative and supports other projects, as needed.

Is organized, responsible, and reports results clearly and efficiently to supervisor.

Research Assistant III:

Performs cell culture experiments, while maintaining a sterile cell culture environment and equipment, and following all safety protocols.

Collects tissue from mice.

Collects and analyzes experimental data. Keeps clear records of experiments in a lab notebook and electronically.

Proposes alternative research methods, techniques and initiatives demonstrating knowledge of other scientific areas and related research.

Demonstrates scientific knowledge and analytical skills to monitor, modify, and design experiments.

Independently expands scope of literature search to support and/or propose alternative experimental methods, procedures and/or techniques.

Gathers information to prepare budget for acquisition of supplies and equipment.

Leads multiple, concurrent projects; collaborates with others; instructs others in carrying out experiments.

Understands research goals thoroughly; can instruct and inform others about past and future research directives. Also coordinates with outside collaborators to open new avenues of research.

The RA III may have direct supervisory responsibilities and is accountable to insure the effective training and development program for assigned personnel.

Requirements:

Research Assistant II:

Bachelor's degree in biological sciences or related discipline OR 3 - 6 years of directly related experience in a Laboratory setting.

Expertise in cell and molecular biology.

Mouse handling and husbandry skills desired. Training is provided.

Demonstrated ability in development of research protocols.

Demonstrated success in coordinating and/or conducting multiple, concurrent projects.

Ability to interact with all individuals in a productive, professional and positive manner to enhance the outcome of the goals of the research program.

Established understanding of good safety practices and a demonstrated history of safe conduct.

Self-motivated with the ability to organize time effectively, demonstrated ability to manage details.

Computer skills for data documentation, analysis, and presentation (Word, Excel, PowerPoint or equivalents) are required. Coding skills (R, Matlab, or equivalent) are a plus.

Ability to work flexible shifts (evening/week-end/holiday).

Research Assistant III:

Bachelor's or Master's degree in biological sciences or related discipline OR 6+ years of directly related experience.

Advanced cell and molecular biology techniques, including primary culture isolation and next-generation-sequencing.

Advanced mouse handling, husbandry skills and biomethods. Training is provided.

Ability to interact with all individuals in a productive, professional and positive manner to enhance the outcome of the goals of the research program.

The ability to work in a demanding, fast paced, team-oriented environment, while maintaining a high-level of professionalism.

Computer skills for data documentation, analysis, and presentation (Word, Excel, PowerPoint or equivalents) are required. Coding skills (R, Matlab, or equivalent) are a plus.

Demonstrated success in conducting multiple, concurrent projects.
