The Department of Marine Resources (DMR) is seeking well qualified applicants to fill a Paralegal Assistant position in Augusta, Maine
BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION:The Department of Marine Resources (DMR) is seeking applicants to provide support for the administration of the aquaculture program. The position assists the Aquaculture Division with processing lease applications including tracking applications as they move through the process, scheduling public comment periods and adjudicatory hearings, executing leases, compiling and distributing legal notices, and providing lease processing information to stakeholders. The lease application process is prescribed in statute and DMR rules, and has numerous detailed legal requirements for time limits, notices, decisions, leases, and the management of public comment periods, public scoping sessions, and public hearings. This administrative work is critical to ensuring that DMR meets all legal requirements for notification of lease proposals and that lease applications move through applicable processing phases in a timely manner.
Other tasks include: updating and maintaining electronic filing systems, databases, and the Aquaculture Division web page; tracking milestones of granted leases, such as expiration dates; working with other state agencies to help process pro-rated and annual rent; ensuring that performance bonds/escrow agreements are current, responding to stakeholder inquiries and information requests; and assisting the Aquaculture Division staff with general administrative tasks as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelors Degree and one (1) year of paralegal experience in a law firm, court, or legal services agency
OR graduation from an approved paralegal course of instruction. Equivalent related experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
ADDITIONAL DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Highly proficient in Microsoft platforms, including Excel and Access; data entry and management skills; the ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing; strong attention to detail, an ability to effectively multitask in a fast-paced environment; and customer service experience.
