1st CLASS WELDER/MACHINIST

The Department of Public Works seeks a talented individual to perform highly skilled work above the journeyman level, performing more difficult and complex tasks of welding, brazing, straightening, cutting and machining of all metals, using oxy-fuel and electric arc welding equipment.  This position works under the supervision of the Machine/Weld Shop Foreman and will work Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.  Essential duties include inspect and examine proposed repairs to determine feasibility or method of repair; lays out, cuts and fits material of all gauges for welding; preheats and cleans metals; welds, brazes and solders all materials; does welding of difficult materials such as stainless steel, high-strength alloy steels, aluminum, cast-iron and other materials; designs, lays out and manufactures jigs and fixtures to facilitate welding work and to perform unusual and especially difficult tasks; estimates time and materials on job; does welding repairs to construction and maintenance equipment and machinery; operates forklifts and overhead crane as needed; uses vertical mill and lathe as required; may use precision measuring instructions; may supervise employees of a lower classification.  Requirements: Knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment of the metal working trades; knowledge of the occupational hazards and practice of safety precautions of the trade; ability to use shop math and read blueprints; extensive knowledge of machinist and sheet metal trades; must possess rigging abilities; minimum of 4 years experience in welding and metals work above the journeyman level; graduation from standard high school or any equivalent combination of experience, training and certification; highly skilled in the use of tools and equipment of the metal working trades; agility to work under varied climatic conditions.  Must possess valid State of Maine Class B driver’s license or willing to obtain in 6 months and must maintain good driving record.  Must possess AWS Pipe Welding Certification; must pass federally mandated drug test if hold CDL license or upon attainment of CDL permit; must undergo pre-employment medical exam and fitness assessment.  Offers of employment are contingent upon successful completion of criminal background check.  Could be hired as 2nd or 3rd class welder at lower pay grade and work up to 1st class welder.  Pay rate starting at $873.60/week – additional $1.00/hour market rate stipend – plus eligible for up to $2.00 stipend for plate/pipe certifications.
