Job Description Summary

Travelers is looking for an experienced Data Engineering Leader / Architect to join our Enterprise Payments and Billing Value Stream to lead multiple development teams, while providing focus on developing and improving data engineering practices and discipline. This individual will partner with architecture, enterprise data/analytic teams and other senior technical leaders to develop and implement a consolidated roadmap to meet critical data/analytic related business needs and capabilities, while implementing technologies, platforms and tools aligned to the Travelers technology strategy. Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities

Primary accountability to simplify and streamline the EPB data landscape, identifying and executing new technologies to improve real time data integration, increase access to data and actionable information, and implement strategic solutions to sustain these capabilities.

+ Work very closely with Value Stream lead, Circle Leads, Billing Architect, data engineers and the broader data/analytic community to:

+ Define target state architecture for EPB Data and Analytics platform

+ Define Value Stream best practices pertaining to the capture of metadata, data governance, data security

+ Integrate Data Architecture components (DBs, reporting and analytics tools, self-service platform) into broader EB&P target architecture

+ Define and oversee implementation execution for Operational and Analytical Data Lakes including data migration patterns from mainframe data stores to Public Cloud Data Lake

+ Develop approach and maintain accountability for the Integration layer of the EPB technical ecosystem

+ Key contributor to and member of the CSS Data Engineering Chapter and active participant in Enterprise Data & Analytics strategic initiatives

+ Provide mentorship and train staff on standards and policies around best data engineering practices

+ Work directly with the business partners to review business requirements and collaborate with Circle architects on designing strategic solutions

+ Complete expert engineering tasks for impactful and high-visibility initiatives.

+ Build and develop discipline-specific capabilities across multiple teams, equipping individuals with the skills, tools, and standard approaches to improve the overall quality of engineering practices and skill sets.

+ Build collaborative relationships with key leaders and peers across the organization (i.e. Team Leaders, CoEs) to ensure the best use of overall resources.

+ Develop robust talent pipeline. Provide unique opportunities and challenges to each team member to enrich development.

+ Provide technical leadership, foster a team environment, and provide mentorship and feedback to technical resources.

+ Apply knowledge of current industry trends and techniques to formulate solutions within the context of assigned efforts.

+ May assist as an individual contributor to an Agile Product Team (e.g. developing solutions to achieve defined business outcomes) in addition to leading a team.

+ Seek opportunities to expand technical knowledge and capabilities.

Minimum Qualifications

+ Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or its equivalent in work experience.

+ Five years of programming/development experience.

+ One year of experience of technical leadership.

Education, Work Experience, & Knowledge

+ Experience working in an agile environment

+ Solid understanding and ability to leverage architecture principles to define solutions and roadmaps

+ Experience with Data Lake, Data Warehouse, ETL build and design

+ Data migration experience from legacy system including DB2, IMS, Oracle, Teradata

+ Minimum 3 years designing and building production data pipelines from ingestion to consumption

+ Working knowledge and experience with NoSQL databases, MuleSoft, Kafka, SQL, Host & distributed programming languages

+ Good understanding of cloud computing infrastructures and platforms ((AWS preferred)

+ Willingness to learn new technologies

+ Excellent communication skills – can work with engineers and leadership across multiple circles and understand/ plan for differing levels of maturity

Preferred Experience :

+ Prior experience implementing Public Cloud Data Lake and familiarity with Cloud Data Security concepts is a must

+ Deep understanding in Information architecture principles, data modeling background and experience

+ Property and Casualty experience, billing capability background

+ Working knowledge and experience with technologies/capabilities such as Data Lake (Snowflake preferred), Kafka, Business rules engine (IBM ODM preferred), reporting tools (Qlik or MicroStrategy preferred)

+ Domain Expertise – Demonstrated track record of domain expertise including the ability to leverage expertise to improve company level capabilities within domain, consult on business priorities and optimize value by identifying business aligned solutions and thoughtfully and practically introduce concepts and technologies from the industry.

+ Problem Solving – Strong problem solver who creates architecture that is particularly robust against single points of failure, both in terms of systems and people and looks ahead 6-12 months to identify areas of need and turns this into action.

+ Communication – Strong communicator who possesses the ability to describe technology concepts in ways the business can understand, document effectively so that systems/architectures can be maintained or built upon, collaborate across disparate groups, helping to identify common goals and gain consensus, adapt language to meet the needs of various levels of technical and non-technical audiences and model and assist others in the practice of mindful communication, active listening, and messaging.

+ Leadership – Advanced leadership skills including the ability to leverage internal networks across engineering and engage with other leaders to solve problems and develop strong credibility throughout the company as well as choose the most critical engineering challenges and work to improve the entire engineering organization by teaching others and sharing knowledge while creating opportunities for others to showcase and develop skills.
