Job ID

Biostatistician, Computational Scientist, Scientific Software Engineer

Computational Scientists (Assistant/Associate/Full), under the supervision of the Associate Director in Computational Sciences, participate in the collaborative bioinformatics program aligned with institutional strategy and direction and make leading contributions to the cutting edge projects at The Jackson Laboratory. Computational Scientists will closely work with the research faculty & genetic resource scientists across all three campuses of The JAX on projects of wide ranging complexity from a diverse array of biomedical disciplines such as cancer biology, ageing, immunology, infectious diseases, metabolomics, neural disorders, muscular disorders, Biostatistics & Statistical Genetics, and stem cell & developmental biology. They also work with The JMCRS staff and Scientific Services to meet the analytical needs of The JAX’s Services, clients and partners. In addition, a Computational Scientist will participate in all CS departmental activities and collaborations as assigned by the supervisor or Associate Director or Director of the group to the extent assigned. They include, not limited to, helping interns, post-doctoral fellows, scientists, grant writing and CS Helpdesk.

Successful candidates will have in-depth knowledge and experience in High Throughput Sequence (HTS) data analysis (DNA Seq, mRNA Seq, ChIP Seq, micro RNA Seq etc), microarray data analysis, experimental design, data integration, algorithm development, development of sequence analysis tools (bioinformatics programming), evaluation of analytical tools and technology, and delivering training to the research community. They are continuous learners and proactive contributors. Furthermore, they will present the results to

The JAX community, at conferences and workshops.

Characteristic distinction from Assistant Computational Scientist to full Computational Scientist include increased ability to work independently, development of in-depth knowledge in selected biological disciplines to analyze and provide expert reasoning to the relevant projects, and provide project and grant application leadership. A full Computational Scientist is expected to independently establish and sustain collaborations within JAX, providing expert reasoning to the projects relevant to the scientist’s disciplines and lead or co-lead grant writing in collaboration with JAX researchers.

The candidates with proven track record of “omics” data analysis, statistical genetics & Biostatistics, independent collaborative work and leading contributions to a biological discipline would be preferred. They will immediately work on a machine learning project to identify molecular changes within cells using third generation sequencing data. A reasonable background in machine learning and programming knowledge in Python language is highly desirable.

They are expected to sustain collaborations with The JAX research staff and faculty on both the Farmington, CT and Bar Harbor, ME campuses and to visit the other sites of JAX on a regular basis and as required.

Computational Scientist carries out Computational analysis of omics data, algorithm implementation as well as bioinformatics programming and expert reasoning and leadership for the projects. Evaluate data for quality assurance and mining bioinformatics databases. Present the results at the international conferences and workshops and contributes the preparation of manuscripts.

  • Participate in departmental and project activities such as developing pipelines, participating in conducting courses and workshops at JAX, provide leading contributions to grant applications, mentoring/supervising students and scientists, participating in CS Helpdesk and presenting results and processes to JAX community and at conferences and workshops as assigned.

  • PhD in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Biostatistics, or related field.
  • Successful incumbents demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience managing projects, mentoring staff and collaborations.
  • Prior successes in and desire to contribute to team projects on an ongoing basis is a must.

About Us

The Jackson Laboratory (JAX) is an independent, nonprofit biomedical research institution with more than 2,200 employees. Headquartered in Bar Harbor, Maine, it has a National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center, a genomic medicine institute in Farmington, Conn., and facilities in Ellsworth, Maine, Sacramento, Calif., and Shanghai, China. Its mission is to discover precise genomic solutions for disease and empower the global biomedical community in the shared quest to improve human health.

JAX Genomic Medicine is transforming medicine by improving patient care, lowering costs, and increasing life span and health span. JAX Genomic Medicine’s research focuses on the complex genetic causes of disease and on the development of genomic solutions tailored to each person’s unique genetic makeup.

JAX Genomic Medicine sits on a 17-acre site on the campus of the University of Connecticut Health Center. The 183,500-square-foot facility opened in the fall of 2014. Now, it houses over 300 biomedical researchers, technicians, and support staff in state-of-the-art computing facilities and laboratories.

In Connecticut, JAX resides in the scenic town of Farmington, in the state’s capitol region. The Hartford region, which offers some of the best public schools in the country, is made up of both bigger cities and smaller, charming historic New England towns. JAX Genomic Medicine is also geographically located within 2 hours of Boston and New York and is close to multiple transportation systems, including bus lines, highways, railroads and international airports.

JAX employees work in a collaborative, value-driven, and team-based environment where the focus is on advancing science and improving patients’ lives. Researchers apply genetics to increase the understanding of human disease and advance treatments and cures for cancer, neurological and immune disorders, diabetes, aging, and heart disease. JAX was voted among the top 15 “Best Places to Work in Academia” in the United States in a poll conducted by The Scientist magazine!
