Position Summary: The Respiratory Therapist evaluates and treats residents; communicates with residents, families, physicians, and other members of the healthcare team; maintains documentation of services in the medical record; and conducts in-services and training for facility staff on an ongoing basis, in accordance with applicable laws and regulations, MVH policies and procedures.
Job Related Responsibilities and Activities:
+ Perform Respiratory therapy assessments, evaluations, treatments, and education as indicated.
+ Demonstrates a good working knowledge and proficiency in respiratory therapy and use of equipment that provides oxygen therapy, aerosol and humidity therapy, Intermittent Positive Pressure Breathing (IPPB) therapy, Chest Physical Therapy (CPT), artificial airway care, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)/Bi-level Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP) and apnea monitoring.
+ Pre-admission assessment/hospital visits for residents with a respiratory diagnosis including but not limited to, COPD, CHF, Pneumonia, respiratory failure, etc.
+ Attends initial meetings, IDT’s, and other meetings pertinent to the care of respiratory residents as directed.
+ Hand out respiratory booklets/informational material and educate residents on this material.
+ Evaluates the respiratory status of residents and develops an effective treatment plan.
+ Ensures that appropriate care is being rendered by reviewing residents’ Care Plan and residents’ chart for specific treatments, medication orders, changes in condition, etc.
+ Completes required documentation including daily notes, record of daily treatment minutes, medication administration and assessment on the treatment administration record (TAR), weekly progress notes, and discharge summaries, as applicable.
+ Participates in discharge planning.
+ Perform discharge evaluation prior to residents discharge in order to evaluate readiness for discharge and understanding of current respiratory medications and DME.
+ Make follow up phone calls to respiratory patients following their discharge.
+ Provides orientation to employees regarding oxygen safety standards and respiratory program.
+ Performs duties in a manner that assures maximum safety to self and others.
+ Perform competency evaluations with staff as needed for various respiratory devices and equipment.
+ Perform other duties pertinent to our respiratory patients and program.
+ Assists in writing or revising policies and procedures, education and competencies related to respiratory therapy services as assigned.
+ Complies with MVH policies and procedures, State and Federal guidelines, and VA regulations including reporting requirements.
+ Displays respectful behavior to residents, families, and visitors, works professionally with vendors and others outside MVH, and provide positive information to others on MVH services.
+ Works cooperatively with staff in all other departments.
+ Represents MVH locally, state-wide, and nationally through committee appointments, board memberships, professional organizations, and other activities.
+ Attends various facility committees meetings as requested by ADNS.
+ Resident-directed care and services during interactions and planning sessions with Residents and Families.
+ Ensures therapy equipment safety, cleanliness, and function. Works with Supervisor to procure and budget for respiratory equipment.
+ Actively engaged in QAPI and demonstrates behavior consistent with MVH QAPI guiding principles.
+ Maintains current licensure and submits renewed license prior to expiration to HR or Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP), Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT), or Certified Respiratory Therapy Technician (CRTT) with National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) credentials and valid registered license for the state in which employed.
+ Attends required facility education and training sessions.
+ Keeps informed on respiratory therapy trends, resources, procedures, and community resources; updates department accordingly.
+ Works with Supervisor to grow and implement the respiratory program at the facility.
+ Provides to Supervisor and Administrator monthly report of activities including but not limited to productivity, caseload volume, program enhancements, etc, as assigned.
+ MVH employees must promptly report, to one’s supervisor, Human Resources or through the Hotline, any activity that the employees believe in good faith may be a violation of a law, regulation, MVH policy or the MVH Code of Conduct. In addition, each employee must cooperate with any investigation conducted or sponsored by MVH in connection with any alleged violation of policy, law, regulation or code.
Education /Training/Experience: RRT Credentialed by the National Board for Respiratory Care. Must have current State of Maine licensure as Respiratory Therapist.Experience in long-term care environment preferred.
