Class A CDL Transportation Driver
Reports To: Dispatcher and/or Transportation Manager
Physical demands for the CDL A driver are detailed on the attached sheet. In general, the driver must be able to handle heavy freight, either on pallets or in wheeled carts. Driver must also be able to operate landing gear, release fifth wheel jaws, and move into, out of, around and under tractor and trailer for inspections. Periods of extended sitting are required. Exposure to all New England weather conditions for extended periods is required.
Driver must hold a valid DOT medical card.
Drives tractor trailer combination, applying knowledge of commercial driving
regulations, to transport and deliver products and materials. Runs are both intrastate and interstate. All drivers are assumed to be interstate, as they are forwarding interstate commerce.
Driver must have:
? Commercial driver’s license (CDL) with a class A endorsement
? Valid medical card and self-certification form, on file with the licensing authority
? Full knowledge of the Federal Motor Carrier rules and regulations including safety regulations and Hours of Service regulations
? Training regarding drug abuse & alcohol misuse, as required by Federal Motor Carrier rules. Driver will be enrolled in a random drug and alcohol testing pool
? Driver must be available to work any hours of the day and any days of the week. Flexibility is essential for this position, as schedule changes are common and normally very short notice
Tasks (To Include but not be limited to):
? Inspect truck before and after trips (pre-trip & post trip) and submit reports indicating truck condition
? Correctly fills out Driver Trip/Time report daily
? Maintain driver log according to I.C.C. regulations
? Inform dispatch when hours of service may exceed those allowed by FMCSA
? Drive safely in all weather conditions.
? Route planning, map reading and trip planning
? Read bill of lading to determine assignment
? Fasten straps and/or load bars to secure load on trailers during transit
? Load and Unload or assist in loading and unloading freight
? May service truck with oil, fuel and radiator fluid to maintain tractor trailer
? Obtain customer signature for receipt of load when necessary
? Inventory and inspect goods to be moved
? Communicates with Customers, Transportation Manager, Service Supervisor and co-workers in a professional manner
Driver is required to report to their supervisor any accidents, near misses, or unsafe acts or conditions in the workplace. The driver is also required to report any suspected violations of law witnessed in the workplace. This reporting may be to the direct supervisor, or may be to the Human Resources Manager.
- Must work safely, following safety procedures, policies and practices
- When in designated areas, proper PPE is to be worn
- Maintains a cooperative and productive workplace attitude when engaging with others
