Summary

Exciting opportunity to join the Scientific Services team as a a Flow Cytometrist. This individual would assist in all aspects of the daily operations in the flow cytometry facility to support research at the Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine.
Responsibilities

  • Provide the calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting, and any requested researcher assistance on all equipment in the Flow Cytometry Service.
  • Maintain current and develop new protocols and SOPs for all aspects of equipment operation and data analysis.
  • Keep all equipment in good working condition and ready for use at all times including a well-stocked inventory of reagents to enable users to perform studies 24/7. Provide troubleshooting and work with manufacturer’s Technical Support and Technical Engineers.
  • Provide independent or operator-assisted sorting on a flexible schedule, as a primary job responsibility. This includes selecting nozzle sizes, optimizing instrument settings, perform calibrations, and evaluate daily standardization results to take appropriate actions in case of problems. Must be able to trouble-shoot and fix problems on the spot with the minimum of instrument downtime. Must be able to communicate instrument capabilities to users in order to provide realistic expectations. Must be able to train heavy users to be capable of self-run sorting.
  • Provide operator-assisted and training necessary for independent acquisition and analysis of multi-color FACS samples in facilities cytometers.
  • Design new high complexity FACS staining panels and protocols to customize deliverables to users.
  • Provide education and train new users for instrument use, general facility etiquette, safety, some basic trouble-shooting, software function, and data interpretation & representation.
  • Meet Service Level Agreements including deliverables definitions, time lines and quality.
  • Purchase reagents and disposables as needed.
  • Keep consistent documentation and data entry into iLab and assist with monthly billing.
  • As directed, enhance Service capabilities through R&D activities funded through the service operating account, Res. Admin Account, or Director’s Innovation funds.
  • Attend instrument training sessions and develop in house training tools to train users on new instrumentation. Give presentations as needed to educate users on new capabilities.

Qualifications

  • Flow Cytometrist I:B.S. degree in the Biological sciences or Biochemistry with proficient knowledge of genetics, physics, chemistry, instrumentation, immunology, and computers.
    At least two years of laboratory experience.
    Demonstrated ability to be a positive team player across a diverse organization.
    Experience using Microsoft Office products, further experience with specialized Flow Cytometry analysis software a plus. Proficiency on Macintosh and PC computers.
    Excellent personal communication skills for both individual and group settings. Demonstrate patience, a willingness to help others, an ability to explain complex principles clearly and concisely to all experience levels.
    Training in bacteriological, viral, chemical and physical safety a plus. Able to work safely in a BSL2 environment.
  • Flow Cytometrist II:B.S. degree in the Biological sciences or Biochemistry with proficient knowledge of genetics, physics, chemistry, instrumentation, immunology, and computers.
    Two to three years experience with Flow Cytometry. Familiarity with BD Sorters (FACSAria) and analyzers (LSR-II or Fortessa X-20) or other flow cytometry instrumentation is a plus.
    Demonstrated ability to successfully manage multiple projects to completion.
    Demonstrated ability to be a positive team player across a diverse organization.
    Experience using specialized analysis software (FlowJo, CellQuest, DiVa, Ideas (ISX) as well as Microsoft Office products. Proficiency on Macintosh and PC computers.
    Excellent personal communication skills for both individual and group settings. Demonstrate patience, a willingness to help others, an ability to explain complex principles clearly and concisely to all experience levels.
    Training in bacteriological, viral, chemical and physical safety. Able to work safely in a BSL2 environment.
  • Flow Cytometrist III:B.S. degree in the Biological sciences or Biochemistry with proficient knowledge of genetics, physics, chemistry, instrumentation, immunology, and computers.
    Extensive experience (greater than 4 years) with a diverse array of flow cytometry platforms, especially with cell sorters.
    Extensive experience (greater than 4 years) with sample preparation, tissue dissociation, and antibody panel staining with a wide variety of tissue and sample types.
    Demonstrated ability to successfully manage multiple projects to completion.
    Demonstrated ability to be a positive team player across a diverse organization.
    Extensive experience using specialized analysis software (FlowJo, CellQuest, DiVa, Ideas (ISX) as well as Microsoft Office products. Proficiency on Macintosh and PC computers.
    Excellent personal communication skills for both individual and group settings. Demonstrate patience, a willingness to help others, an ability to explain complex principles clearly and concisely to all experience levels.
    Training in bacteriological, viral, chemical and physical safety. Able to work safely in a BSL2 environment.
