Position Summary

The Department of Anthropology at Bowdoin College invites applications for two tenure-track positions in cultural anthropology to begin July 1, 2020. We intend to hire at the rank of Assistant Professor, but exceptional senior candidates will also be considered.

We are open to a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches to the following topical areas:

Environmental Justice and Social Inequality
We seek a cultural anthropologist whose research on the environment forefronts issues of inequality and justice in historically marginalized communities. Topical specializations might include: chemical exposures and toxicity; climate crises and justice; disaster and creative adaptations; environmental governance and ethics; environmental racism and slow violence; food (in)security; land dispossession and reclamation; resource extraction, social resistance, and sovereignty.

Critical Studies of Health
We seek a cultural anthropologist whose research forefronts issues of health and well-being at the intersection of local/global systems of power. Topical specializations might include: addiction and violence; bio-medical practice and ethics; (dis)ability and social movements; displacement, migration, and health insecurities; drug development and pharmaceuticals; traditional medical knowledge and indigenous practices; genomics and bioinformatics; humanitarian, medical, and/or techno-scientific governance; materiality of scientific objects; mental health and psychic life; trauma, survival, and recovery of persons and communities.

The ideal candidate is committed to excellence in research and teaching and has developed geographical and topical specializations that complement or extend those currently covered in the Department. We also seek colleagues who will collaborate with us as we build a program that integrates the subdisciplines of cultural anthropology and anthropological archaeology.

Bowdoin requires a strong commitment to research and a promise of long-term successful scholarly engagement as well as a dedication to teaching excellence in a liberal arts environment. The College offers opportunities for professional development, a fully-funded, year-long junior sabbatical leave (after three years of teaching and successful reappointment), and regular, generously funded, post-tenure sabbaticals. The teaching load is two courses per semester. The successful candidates will teach courses in their areas of expertise and will contribute to the rotation of core courses for the major in Anthropology (including Introduction to Cultural Anthropology; Ethnographic Research; History of Anthropological Theory). A Ph.D. in Anthropology is expected by date of appointment.
