Job Description

The Bangor Police Department is the second largest municipal agency in the state of Maine employing 84 sworn members and over 110 total employees – with a wide variety of interesting specialty assignments as well as opportunities for advancement – we are able to offer unique and unmatched career choices for everyone!

The Bangor Police Department has announced a NEW three (3) days on/three (3) days off patrol unit work schedule. We provide a competitive wage and comprehensive benefit package to include vacation, sick leave, health insurance, life insurance, supplemental insurance, retirement, employee assistance, uniforms and equipment.

The City of Bangor offers the Maine State Retirement (MPERS) option for police officers. Officers are eligible to retire at 50% pay of their top highest three years. There is no age limit to withdraw and for every year you remain vested after 25, you add 2%. Take advantage of overtime opportunities including numerous concert and festival events hosted in Bangor throughout the year and new Officers can earn in excess $55,000 – $60,000 annually. Applicants may also choose an ICMA 401(A) retirement plan as well.

We also have officers who specialize in firearms instruction, MARC, SFST, EVOC, Forensic Mapping, Less Lethal munitions, armorers, fitness and RAD instruction.

Academy Certified graduates may earn up to $24.81 per hour, based on experience, with increases in subsequent steps. Pre-Academy Salary: $856.80 to $874.00 per week and depending on experience and qualifications. In addition we provide educational and military stipends based on experience, lateral transfer options, a monthly cell-phone allowance and the opportunity to be reimbursed for continued educational classes.
Applicants are not required to have a degree but must be 21 years old to apply. If you are 20 years of age, you must have a minimum of 60 credit hours. Applicants are also required to have already completed and passed the Maine Criminal Justice Academy Alert and Physical Fitness Test (non-certified).
